In order to better recognize the valuable contributions of staff members at Valley City State University, we began a new "Employee of the Quarter" recognition program this fall. During each quarter of the year a member of VCSU's staff will be selected as the outstanding employee. Staff members from VCSU are nominated by their peers and selected by a panel comprised of a student, staff member, and professor. In addition to recognizing those selected with this award on-campus and presenting them with a plaque and gift, I will also be using this column as an opportunity to introduce you to the awardees each quarter.
I am so pleased to announce the very first recipient of VCSU's Employee of the Quarter award is Charlene Stenson. I cannot think of another individual more deserving of receiving this inaugural award. Charlene, a native of rural Cooperstown, currently serves as VCSU's Director of Enrollment Services and has been employed at VCSU since 1999. However, Charlene's roots at VCSU are far deeper than just the past 13 years. Charlene first came to VCSU as a freshman in 1979 and was recruited to the campus to play basketball. She also participated in softball and track & field, and graduated from VCSU in 1983 with a teaching degree in physical education.
Following a career of teaching and coaching at various schools and levels in North Dakota as well as in Limon, Colorado, Charlene returned to begin her career at VCSU as an admissions counselor in 1999. Currently, as VCSU's Director of Enrollment Services, a position to which she was appointed in 2008, Charlene has responsibility for three admissions counselors, an office manager, as well as the Viking Ambassador student representatives. Additionally, Charlene assists in the design and coordination of VCSU's marketing materials, helps develop the overall strategy for recruiting students to VCSU, works with faculty, staff, and coaches in student recruitment efforts, and communicates with prospective students, their families, and high school counselors.
When asked what gets Charlene excited to come to work everyday, she replied, "I still feel the Viking Pride when I walk onto campus each day and am so very glad to be able to share that with students and parents who don't know us." When asked what makes VCSU a great place to work, Charlene answered, "The People. It has always been the personal touch, the extra mile that so many VCSU employees give that makes me the most proud of the university. As times are changing regarding technology and the future of the university, I hope that this piece never does. To me, it is who we are!" I love that answer, and it is so fitting because Charlene is exactly the kind of dedicated outstanding employee we are so fortunate to have at VCSU!
Charlene and her husband of 29 years, Dean, reside near Sanborn with their two hunting dogs. The Stensons love the outdoors and engage in various outdoor activities throughout the year such as hunting, fishing, gardening, and snowmobiling. You will also find Charlene at many VCSU Viking athletic contests. She is a wonderful supporter of the students of Valley City State, and we are so fortunate to have her leading our Enrollment Services.
Congratulations Charlene and thanks for all the wonderful service you continue to provide to VCSU and our students!
