Both the men and women Viking Harriers took a short trip down Interstate 94 to compete at longtime rival Jamestown College on their homecoming weekend at Hillcrest Golf Course.
As with most golf courses, it was relatively flat with the exception of one large hill, which proved to be a challenge to all as it was close to 400m in length. As a newcomer to the Dakota's it would not be a real cross country meet unless there was a 20-25 MPH wind blowing, the runners were not disappointed.
While the times were not as fast as the previous week, the Viking men performed well as a team beating Jamestown College on their home course. Richard Wright for the second week in a row was VCSU number one runner finishing eighth in 28:15. Wright was Followed by Wayne Engelhard in fourteenth with a time of 29:05, on Wayne's heels was Jose Garcia and Kinsly Tarmann both timed in 29:06 finishing fifteen and sixteen respectively. Freshmen Malik Jackson also broke into the team's top five in placing twenty second with a time of 29:40. The only VCSU Harrier to set a personal record was Eric Schauer. Eric is competing in his first Collegiate cross country season. He began the season with a 34:53/8000m and has steadily dropped his time to now running around 30:06.
Anna Fuka ran a gutsy first 2.5 miles positioning herself in the top five but unfortunately she ran out of gas in the closing stage of the race, but still ran one of her better times for the 5km in finishing eleventh with a time of 20:16. While Anna was disappointed in her race she gained valuable experience to take with her to the next race. Summer Romine raced strongly throughout the race passing a number of runners in the last mile to finish twenty-fourth with a time of 21:36. Freshmen Jenna Coghlan also continued her journey gaining more experience in her first cross country season ever in finishing fiftieth.
