As written previously, I am taking the opportunity with these columns to feature recent recipients of VCSU’s Employee of the Quarter. I fell behind earlier this year in recognizing a couple individuals, so today am introducing you to Kim Hesch who was named the Employee of the Quarter for Summer 2013.

Kim has been employed at Valley City State University since 1996. During her 17 years at VCSU, Kim has worked in the Center for Innovation in Instruction, the Office of the President, and in her current role as assistant director of advancement and alumni relations in the VCSU Foundation and Alumni Office. Kim also taught on a part-time basis for the VCSU Division of Business for 10years. Kim’s diverse career path at VCSU has certainly given her a strong understanding of many facets of the university while also allowing her to know many students and alumni. Additionally, Kim is a 1991 graduate of VCSU, having earned a Bachelor of Science in Education.

In her current role, Kim builds and maintains relations with alumni and friends of VCSU. This includes working with the Alumni Board of Directors in planning social activities, reunions, and homecoming events. She also coordinates several fund–raising activities, including the VCSU Scholarship Auction that has sold out the last three years while raising dollars for scholarships. Kim also oversees the office budget and financial activities for the VCSU Foundation, and she monitors scholarship endowments.

When Kim was asked about the changes at VCSU over the years, she replied, “My junior year at VCSU a lab was set up on campus with PCs – prior to that our computer labs were run off of a mainframe. This was our first introduction to using a floppy disk and a mouse! I remember thinking how techie I was going out into the workforce having that experience. Now our students carry a laptop with them to class or are using their smartphones.”

Asked what gets her excited about coming to work every day, Kim replied, “The variety of activities I get to work on and the people I get to work with — our volunteers are the best. I also get to promote VCSU every day!” Kim also mentioned that VCSU is a great place to work due to: “The people who work here. We have a lot of dedicated faculty and staff that truly care about the students and their education.”

Kim and her husband, Wade, live in Valley City with their son Easton, a sixth-grader at Washington. Kim is a graduate of Oriska High School and has strong ties in the region. Kim and her family are regular attendees at many VCSU Viking athletic events. In her spare time, Kim volunteers with the United Way, is active in her church and with Washington Elementary PTO, and she enjoys time with her family and attending her son’s activities.

Kim is a fantastic part of the VCSU Community, and she is a wonderful supporter of our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and campus friends. Congratulations, Kim, on your well-earned Employee of the Quarter award, and thanks for all you do for Valley City State University!
