It was a tale of two halves Friday night in Valley City.
After Valley City State built a 50-37 halftime lead, Dordt College outscored the Vikings 63-43 in the second half en route to a 100-93 victory.
Valley City State drops to 0-1. Dordt College improves to 1-0 this season.
On a night when VCSU's Aaron Duske scored his 1,000th career point and AJ McDonald poured in a career-high 33 points, Dordt College was just too good in the second half. The Defenders shot 72 percent (21-for-29) in the second half and 58 percent in the game.
The Vikings were able to shoot 51 percent for the game, but only 39 percent in the decisive second half. McDonald led the Vikings with 33 points on 8-for-13 shooting. He went 5-for-8 from the 3-point line and 12 of 16 on free throws.
Aaron Duske scored 14 points, surpassing 1,000 for his career with two free throws in the final seconds. Freshman Mac Kroeplin dropped 13 points in his Viking debut and Jeff Romeus and Russell Robinson each scored 10.
Dordt had four players scored 20 or more points in the game. Austin Katje, Kyle Lindbergh and Dalton Franken all scored 22 points, and Tyler Wolterstorff added 21 points. Katje scored his 1000th career point in the game as well.
