With this week’s column, I am introducing you to Emma Tufte. A couple weeks ago, Emma was named Valley City State University’s Employee of the Quarter for Fall 2013.

Emma has been employed at VCSU for nearly four years. Emma began her employment as an administrative assistant splitting her duties between the Great Plains STEM Education Center and the School of Education and Graduate Studies (SEGS). Today, Emma is full-time in SEGS working as an administrative and assessment assistant. In addition to her employment, Emma is currently pursuing her Master of Education in Teaching & Technology through VCSU and is expecting to complete her M.Ed. in May 2014.

In her administrative position in SEGS, Emma wears a variety of hats fulfilling a range of important roles. Her responsibilities include editing promotional materials, preparing reports and data entry, working with students applying for admission to the Teacher Education program, and providing support for VCSU’s efforts in the Network for Excellence in Teaching (NExT) program (NExT is a grant supported by the Bush Foundation). Emma has also been very active in employee governance matters; she recently served as the president of the VCSU Staff Senate and is the current president-elect of the North Dakota University System Staff Senate.

Asked what gets her excited about coming to work, Emma replied, “I get to work with a variety of projects within SEGS. Sometimes, that means I get to be creative working with InDesign software, the next day I might be troubleshooting a technology problem or gathering data for reporting. Working with the faculty, staff and students on campus puts a human story behind the photos, applications, and data that I work with and that makes it very enjoyable to come to work.”

About the work environment on campus, Emma further commented, “VCSU has provided me with a variety of opportunities to continually learn more, whether in a formal training session or class, or just by having a discussion with others.”

Emma is a native of Edgeley, N.D. and earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Jamestown. Emma’s husband Tyler is a 2005 graduate of VCSU, and he is employed in the Information Technology Center (ITC) on campus as an applications developer. Emma and Tyler have a two-year old daughter. They also have a black lab cross, and in her spare time Emma enjoys crafting, quilting, and running.

Congratulations to Emma on her very deserving honor of being named Employee of the Quarter at VCSU for Fall 2013. A big word of “Thanks” to Emma for everything she does in supporting the faculty, staff, and students in VCSU’s School of Education and Graduate Studies!
