A junior at VCSU, Kecia is pursuing a degree in English education with minors in music and library and media science, along with an endorsement in speech education.

Because of her major and minors, she works closely with many of the English professors here on campus and speaks very highly of them. “I absolutely love how all the faculty and staff want to know what your goals are,” says Kecia. “They’re like our own personal cheerleaders. The professors know your strengths and weaknesses, and help you act on them.”

One of the things Kecia appreciates about her English classes is the flexibility that her professors employ in switching up class activities and assignments. They adjust what they’re doing in the classroom according to what their students need, and that makes for better teaching and learning.

Classes and homework aren’t the only things Kecia does at VCSU; she’s very much invested in campus life. She serves as president of the Philos (the Philomathian Sorority, if you want to be formal), a Viking Ambassador, a member of Viking Campus Activities Board (VCAB, as it’s known on campus), Concert Choir, and English Club. Kecia helps out as a New Student Orientation leader and a “Learning to Live, Living to Learn” mentor and also as a writing tutor in the campus Learning Center. (Whew!)

And if that’s not enough, she also works as a student assistant in Enrollment Services.

As a counterbalance for her busy class, work, and activity schedule, Kecia has a couple activities she enjoys for de-stressing, including napping (yes!) and listening to VCAB comedians. She does save some time for friends, too, and her classmates elected her to the 2015 VCSU Homecoming Court.

Always smiling—a breath of fresh air on campus—Kecia’s a great asset on the Valley City State campus.
