Ozzie Johnson to speak on ‘Treasures of the Past’ at museum in Valley City

A photo of Ozzie Johnson, VCSU FacultyOzzie Johnson of Valley City State University will speak on “Treasures of the Past, Gifts for the Future” at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 18, at the Barnes County Museum. This program is part of the Barnes County Historical Society Lecture Series Season 23.

The museum’s 1860s Arlington Square Grand Piano (Boston) was owned by Lura Livonia Perrine and brought to Valley City in the 1890s when she came to teach at what is VCSU today. One of the first objects donated to the museum when it was founded in 1930 is a predecessor of the modern piano with a slightly different sound and feel. Due to its unique design and construction, it was deemed not tunable or properly playable. Lance Hites has worked to bring it back to playable condition after over 100 years of silence.

Johnson is from Virginia but grew up visiting extended family in eastern North Dakota. At VCSU, Johnson instructs the applied piano studio, teaches piano pedagogy and class piano sequence for music majors, coordinates collaborative piano duties, and directs the jazz ensemble. Johnson also has a deep interest in composition and music theory. His culminating doctoral project was a multi-movement work for piano that he composed, performed, recorded and mastered.

J. Gregory Brister, professor, and Emily D. Wicktor, associate professor, presented at the spring 2024 Minnesota Writing and English Conference at Normandale Community College in Bloomington, Minn.

They presented their scholarship as part of the “Theorizing and Envisioning AI’s Limits and Possibilities” panel. Brister’s paper, titled “AI, Composition Theory, and Teaching Writing,” explores how the emergence of AI technologies should be considered within the context of formal composition theory history. Wicktor’s paper, titled “‘To ask is to break the spell’: Neil Postman, the Huxleyan Warning, and Old-New Visions for College Writing in the Age of AI,” critically assesses AI technologies, especially in writing and research classrooms, in contrast to the foundational concepts and practices of education and media theorists John Dewey, Robert Scholes, and Neil Postman.

Wicktor’s scholarship and presentation was supported by the Dakota Digital Academy Professional Development Award.
