North Dakota's only planetarium

The planetarium at Valley City State University changing from red light to darkness
Experience the Night Sky

Valley City State University is home to the only Planetarium in North Dakota. Our state-of-the-art Rhoades Science Center houses a Spitz 512 planetarium with a 24-foot domed ceiling and 50 reclining seats. VCSU added a Warped Media full-dome projection system in 2025, enhancing both the options and quality of shows offered at the planetarium.

Our shows range from basic astronomy to exploring how Lewis and Clark used the night sky to aid in their exploration of North America. We added 22 new high quality video shows in 2025 along with the purchase of a new Warped Media full-dome projection system. Our planetarium is primarily used to educate area school and community groups, but is also used for VCSU classes like Astronomy and Earth Science. With no charge for shows, it's easy to make the trip to our beautiful campus and have a one-of-a-kind celestial experience.
