Contextualizing the English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS): Grades K-12 This course will give you practical understanding of the ELPA21 English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS). You will learn how to use the ELPS to design lessons for English language learners (ELLs) in mainstream content classrooms and other settings with connections to state content standards (e.g., Common Core State Standards (CCSS)). We will explore the background of the ELPS, their structure, and how to “unpack” and use them to make mainstream content lessons comprehensible to ELLs. We will show how the ELPS can be a useful tool for helping students with the “how” of a lesson, while the content standard remains the “what” of the lesson. Creating a Culture for Learning: Classroom and Behavior Management Plans that Work This is course is designed to teach how to create classroom and behavior management plans that create orderly classrooms where students can and want to do the hard work that is required to succeed. The Safety, Order and Rights® value set is used as the framework for clarifying and communicating the classroom expectations, and is compatible with other value sets that simply and easily communicate the rationale for expectations and procedures. Creating Compassionate Schools Creating Compassionate Schools will provide teachers an overview of the rationale for embracing pedagogical strategies rooted in compassion. The course has been developed to introduce educators to the principles and practices of an approach that takes aim at “getting it right” for both students and their teachers. ELL Language Assessment and Related Issues in the K-12 Classroom: An Introduction This course explores the legal history and politics surrounding language assessment and the different test structures and methods used to assess English language learners. Strategies for Reaching At-Risk Students The goal of this course it to provide participants with the necessary skill set to identify,
diagnose, and meet the needs of at-risk students. The first half of the course focuses on
establishing a definition of what it means to be at-risk, identifying the causes and
