VCSU voice department hits the road

The VCSU voice department hit the road on Dec. 3 to meet some of the area’s budding young singers. As a reimagined experience of the Solo Voice Symposium, Kathryn Rolf and Anthony Rohr, both assistant professors of music, met with the 8-12 grade choir in Fairmount, North Dakota. Viking alum, Tyson Eli, choir teacher, welcomed them with open arms and gave his choir over to Rolf’s expert instruction for the day.

Following a rousing session that included an inspirational pep-talk which had the young talent discussing what they love about music and how it moves them, Rohr and Rolf provided one-on-one vocal instruction to some of Fairmount’s finest voices. The professors remain quite impressed with the skills of these students and find in them valuable prospects to fill the ranks of voice majors within VCSU’s growth-minded music department. Future trips to other regional schools for similar vocal instruction are in the works, including a stop in Lisbon on Dec. 8.
Abshire co-authors new publication featuring internationally collaborative research
Michelle Abshire, Ph.D., assistant professor of geology, was recently involved in research that is now published in the prestigious interdisciplinary journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS, IF 11.2). The article titled “Persistent deep water anoxia in the eastern South Atlantic during the last ice age” can be found here: https://www.pnas.org/content/118/49/e2107034118.
This project was a collaborative effort amongst Abshire, Dr. Natascha Riedinger at Oklahoma State University, Dr. Florian Scholz at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research (Kiel, Germany), Dr. Matthias Zabel at the MARUM Centre for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen (Bremen, Germany).
Richman attends NCTM conference
Harmony Richman, M.Ed., assistant professor of education, recently attended a four-day virtual conference sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. More than 200 presentations were offered for teachers of pre-kindergarten through college. Topics ranged from administration to geometry, precalculus to statistics and beyond.
As the current President-Elect of the ND Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NDCTM), Richman approached the conference this year from what she felt was a different perspective than in previous years’ attendance. The council is actively planning their own NDCTM face-to-face conference in 2022 in Bismarck and not only did Richman attend the conference to continually build upon her skills of current teachers in the field, but continue to build her professional learning network.
