The first day of the conference was filled with an opening ceremony followed by workshops and trainings for students and advisors. The second day of the conference were the competitions and the last day was finals and the final ceremony. All VCSU students completed a 100-question exam in their event area of either finance or management. The other portion of the event is a role-play case study. Students are brought into a prep room and given a case study scenario and are given 30 minutes to draft their responses and ideas. They then appear before a judge who is someone from that industry and given 15 minutes to present the ideas orresponse and answer the judges questions. VCSU DECA was well represented on the international stage with finalists and an international winner!

Kiara Radke, freshman, competed in the Retail Management series event. The event is a composite score of an exam and role-play case study. After scores are verified after the high school event in early May, we will find out if she made the top 20% in her event.

Jennifer Keller, junior, competed in the Financial Accounting series event. The event is a composite score of an exam and role-play case study. On the morning of April 12, Jennifer was called to the stage as a finalist. Only the top 12 were called to the stage and Jennifer immediately went off to compete in another role-play case study. She was excited to be part of the finalists and considered in the top 12 of the event!

Business students place in credit analysis competition

Business students at competition

VCSU business students placed fourth in the North Central Chapter of the Risk Management Association (RMA) 2022 Credit Analysis Competition on April 20 at the Dakota Medical Foundation in Fargo.

Students were provided with a case involving a commercial loan request from a mock borrower, Liquid Transport, Inc. Each team was asked to consider the company’s request for assistance in transitioning ownership of a successful business and long-time bank client between family members. Liquid Transport’s historically strong financial position including robust working capital, low leverage and satisfactory debt service coverage would all be threatened by new debt requested for the ownership transition. The teams were provided with financial information on the company, a lender/borrower dialogue transcript and industry resources to assist with their decision. They were asked to prepare a written loan presentation including a thorough analysis of the company, industry and all key components of the loan request and to recommend approval or denial along with an appropriate structure including financial and reporting covenants. In addition to the written presentation, each group presented their solutions orally to a panel of judges made up of four local lending professionals.

The teams were given approximately one month to prepare their analysis and each team was paired with a mentor from their local banking community to assist with industry-specific questions and provide guidance as needed. VCSU’s team mentor was alumni Josh Kasowski from Bank Forward.
