Raising funds with flamingos

flamingo on lawn

An eager group of students is planning a spring break trip to study abroad in Costa Rica and has begun fundraising. If you are willing to participate in the flamingos fundraiser, please contact Dr. Kiersten Baughman, kiersten.baughman@vcsu.edu, indicating your support. If you agree to participate, a flock of approximately 10 flamingos will appear at some point in the future in your yard, with your options being to 1) pay $10 to have them removed, 2) pay $20 to send them to another specific location, or 3) pay $30 to send them to a specific address and ensure you do not receive them in your yard again. If you support this cause, 100% of proceeds fund the cost of the trip for our students. We plan to begin flocking yards as early as possible, and you can anticipate the flamingos staying for 1-3 days depending on coordinating efforts.

Out of the Darkness walk Oct. 3

VCSU is a proud sponsor of the Valley City Out of the Darkness Walk, an event that raises awareness and funds for suicide prevention. This year’s walk will take place on Sunday, Oct. 3 from 3–4 p.m. on the track at Lokken Stadium. The event provides an opportunity to remember those we’ve lost to suicide, honor those who personally struggle, and provide support to those who come to the walk looking for community and healing. We’d love to see a large campus community presence this year! You can register at www.afsp.org/valleycity or create a fundraising page if you’re interested. Please contact Katie Woehl, event co-chair, with any questions.

Krumwiede and Ketterling complete Project Lead the Way trainings

Lisa Krumwiede

Lisa Krumwiede, assistant professor for the department of technology education, completed the Pre-Service Teacher Training with Project Lead the Way. Gary Ketterling, assistant professor for the department of science, also completed the Classroom Teacher Training Certification.

Project Lead the Way is a nationally recognized K-12 curriculum that provides hands-on STEM-based learning for students. Lisa attended a combination of in-person training on the campus of Ball State University and virtual training over the past year to complete the certification. With this certification, Krumwiede can now train pre-service elementary teachers in the K-5 Launch Project Lead the Way curriculum. Both Krumwiede and Ketterling are now also able to bring this content to their online courses at an introductory level.
