NDUS Director of Articulation & Transfer on VCSU Campus

Lisa Johnson, the North Dakota University System (NDUS) Director of Articulation and Transfer, will be at VCSU on Tuesday, March 30, from 9:30 - 11:30am. She welcomes appointments with faculty and staff to discuss issues related to transfer.

Faculty and staff have always been an integral part of the development of the NDUS transfer policies-including Dual Credit, Common Course Numbering (CCN), the General Education Requirement Transfer Agreement (GERTA), and a growing number of articulation agreements. Lisa is particularly interested in visiting with academic discipline representatives and is readily available to explain Dual Credit, CCN, GERTA, and ND articulation agreements to new faculty and staff.

With over 3,000 transfer students at NDUS colleges and universities, campus visits are an excellent opportunity to understand the environment in which students transfer and to meet with key faculty and staff who work most closely with issues related to transfer.

Please contact Jody Henjum, Academic Affairs at extension 37202 or jody.henjum@vcsu.edu to schedule an appointment with Lisa. All meetings will be held in the Registrar's Office conference room, McFarland Hall Room 218 on March 30.

Hill Attends SIGCSE 2010 in Milwaukee

Hill Attends SIGCSE 2010 in Milwaukee
Dr. Curt Hill attended the annual conference of the Association of Computing Machinery (the oldest professional society concerning computing) Special Interest Group (SIG) on Computer Science Education. The conference was held in Milwaukee from March 10-13, 2010.

The meeting provided several interesting sessions including teaching parallelism, the languages Alice, Scratch, and Greenfoot, teaching compiler construction, student perceptions of plagiarism in programming courses, and other topics of interest to computer science educators. In addition, Hill chaired a session on Peers.

One presentation that was of interest outside of computer science was a talk given on performing collaborative research. It featured three of about five members from the Debug Group as they have come to be called. Each was from a small teaching institution, much like VCSU. Some of the topics included how to form a collaborative group, how to conduct meetings at a distance, and the research advantages of such a group.

BIT Faculty Attend SAP Curriculum Congress 2010

The Division of Business and Information Technology sent five faculty members to the SAP Curriculum Congress 2010 in La Jolla, California March 19-20, 2010. The annual SAP Curriculum Congress brought together leading educators from around the world to exchange ideas and information exploring innovative curricula and the use of technology in the classroom. Brenda Finger, Dr. Kerry Gregoryk, Dr. Curt Hill, Jamie Paurus, and Sue Pfeifer attended workshops and training sessions to bring information and technology back to the classroom.

Finger and Paurus attended Business Intelligence training workshops and plan to use these analysis tools in upper level Business Administration courses as a way for students to analyze data and learn to make sound business decisions using information. Hill attended a development workshop using SAP's development language, ABAP. Hill will be teaching the language in his fall course CSCI 365 Programming Language Topics, an elective in the Enterprise Applications Certificate program. Gregoryk attended a workshop on Project Management and networked with other educators regarding certification programs. Pfeifer participated in pre-congress meetings with other member university faculty coordinators, presented as part of a panel about VCSU's participation in ASUG and the first ever North Central Regional ASUG Meeting held on campus in February, and attended the ABAP workshop.

Over 95,000 companies in over 120 countries run SAP software– from distinct solutions addressing the needs of small businesses and midsize companies to suite offerings for global organizations. VCSU is the only university in several surrounding states participating in the SAP University Alliance program.

McCarriar Attends Convention

McCarriar Attends Convention
Dr. Sharon McCarriar attended the combined North Dakota and Central District Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, & Dance Convention at the Holiday Inn, Fargo, ND, February 4-6, 2010. The educational sessions were presented by public school and collegiate level professionals.

McCarriar attended physical education and health sessions on dance, touch rugby, and 50 new presentation ideas for health promotions. Technology updates were also presented concerning the Palm Pilot. Additional game ideas were discovered for a new game taught last year called Socci.

McCarriar also attended sessions on the National Standards and new elementary assessment ideas, both already part of the physical education curriculum at VCSU in courses HPER 325 and HPER 490 taught by McCarriar.

Scholarship Auction Goes Hawaiian

Scholarship Auction Goes Hawaiian
The 16th annual VCSU Scholarship Auction, scheduled for Friday, April 23 at the Valley City Eagles Club, is taking on a Hawaiian theme this year: "Surf on over to the VCS-Uau."

Kim Hesch, assistant director of Advancement at VCSU, said, "The scholarship auction is the single biggest event in terms of generating scholarship dollars, and it seems to get bigger and better every year."

The Hawaiian theme will have the Eagles decked with Hawaiian & Tropical décor, and attendees are encouraged to come dressed in keeping with the theme.

The social hour and the silent auction begin at 5:00 pm. Each attendee will receive $10 of "Viking Money" they can use to play a variety of games (such as blackjack, limbo, etc.) and can register for a variety of door prizes with their winnings. A buffet dinner will be served from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

The live auction will kick off at 7:00 pm. This is your chance to bid on some great deals while contributing to a great cause. All proceeds from the auction go directly to scholarships. Some of the items up for bid are:

Six-course authentic Italian dinner for 4
Golf packages
A children's playhouse donated by CH Carpenter Lumber
Husqvarna Push Mower donated by Hi-Line Electric
Savings Bonds
Two airline tickets from Allegiant Airlines
Youth Bike donated by Meritcare Clinic - Valley City
Twins tickets, Sioux hockey tickets, MN Viking tickets, Bison football tickets
Pontoon ride on Lake Ashtabula with steak dinner
Tools
Taylor made golf driver
Car washes
3 - Barrister bookcases. These are traditional bookcases with the distinguishing feature of the clear glass front doors. These are rebuilt but not refinished.

After April 15, a list of auction items will be available at alumni.vcsu.edu (click on the "Auction" button).

In recent years, the Scholarship Auction has featured a "horse race" event that has become a new favorite. The race will be back this year, but will take the form of a surfing race to be consistent with the Hawaiian theme. According to Hesch, "Individuals and groups can participate by bidding on surf boards, and the winning bids will be entered into a race in which a roll of the dice lets each participant 'catch a wave.' The first team to reach the beach wins 50% of the combined winning bids – the remaining 50% goes to VCSU scholarships."

Hesch said that scholarships are vital to VCSU's success and all proceeds from the auction go directly to V500 and Century Club scholarships. "Our goal is $45,000 this year, and we would like to sell 400 tickets to the event."

Everyone who buys a ticket will be entered into drawings for valuable prizes including an Arctic Cat 50 cc Scooter (sponsored by Dacotah Bank, a $1,200 value), a $500 gift certificate to Leever's SuperValu (sponsored by Leever's), and a Briggs & Stratton Pressure Washer (sponsored by NAPA, a $399 value). Ticket holders need not be present to win.

Tickets to the auction are $35 each or 2 for $60 and include admission, two beverage tickets, a full buffet dinner, and participation in 3 drawings held throughout the night. Tickets can be purchased from the VCSU Foundation office by calling 845-7203 or from an auction committee member. The auction is a collaborative effort of the V-500 and Century Club boards.
