Thank You!

Thank You!
by Dr. Steve Shirley, VCSU President

The following article will appear in the Valley City Times Record this week.

On April 23, VCSU hosted its 16th Annual Scholarship Auction. The Auction is the single largest event held during the year in support of raising scholarship funds for VCSU students. All funds raised in this event are split equally between the V-500 program for academic scholarships and the Century Club for athletic scholarships.

The Auction was sold out this year with over 520 tickets sold, surpassing last year's total by over 150 tickets. This marks the most tickets ever sold in the 16-year history of the Auction. With the ticket sales, games, live and silent auctions, and other contributions, a net profit of approximately $62,000 was realized for student scholarships. This is nearly a 50 percent increase over last year's total and represents the largest-grossing auction ever at VCSU!

As always, we are thankful to the volunteer members of the Auction Committee who worked so hard to ensure such a successful event. Members of the committee volunteered their time, sold tickets, solicited donations, promoted the event, and worked tirelessly in a variety of other ways. The Committee consists of Paige Bjornson, Mary Bostrom, Dan Clark, Rhonda Fairfield, Brenda Finger, Tara & Tom Glandt, Kim Hesch, Alison Kasowski, Loree Morehouse, Ross Powell, Tara Praska, BJ Pumroy, Larry Robinson, Jenni Lou Russi, Joy Smith, Maria Swenson, and James Thornton – a big thanks for all of their efforts!

Additionally, a word of thanks to the VCSU Alumni and Foundation Office and our Athletic Department for their efforts, and specifically a huge word of thanks to Kim Hesch for all of her efforts in coordinating the Auction. Also, there are many volunteer members who serve on the V-500, Booster, Alumni, and Foundation Boards throughout the year who put in much effort to make events like the Auction such a success. VCSU is fortunate to have their support and dedication.

On behalf of VCSU's students, faculty, and staff, thanks so much to the individuals and businesses who supported the Auction. Your donations, purchases, bidding, participation, and sponsorship is so very appreciated and key to making the event successful. VCSU's ability to attract and retain talented students is dependent in part on the scholarships we offer. We are expecting a significant increase in the size of VCSU's freshmen class in Fall 2010, so your continuing support toward a strong scholarship pool is as important as ever as we head toward the next academic year. Higher education remains a competitive environment in pursuit of the best and brightest students, and it is vital that we provide financial support for our current and future students to assist them with their educational pursuits.

Valley City State will award over $700,000 in total scholarships during 2010-11 to new and returning students. These awards are made to students based on their achievements and contributions to the University. Your support of events such as the Scholarship Auction ensures a strong student population base at VCSU which, in turn, is so important to the success of our community and region. On behalf of the VCSU campus – THANKS to everyone who supported the Auction, and thanks to everyone in the community for your ongoing support of VCSU and its students!

Music Department Maintains High Audition Standards

Music Department Maintains High Audition Standards
Foss Music Hall staff and students have yet to identify this music enthusiast who "pecked" and "pecked" at the door hoping to be admitted for an audition recently. Although his tone was loud, his clarity did not meet the expected standards VCSU students are accustomed to demonstrating. It is not known if his audition would have been vocal or instrumental.
