Viking Booster Kick Off Night Scheduled

The annual Viking Booster Kick Off night will be Wednesday, August 18, 5:30pm at the Eagles Club. Join us for complimentary food and beverage plus updates from the fall coaches about the upcoming seasons.

If you've had a chance to review the Welcome Week 2010 schedule, you'll notice that we are once again welcoming students and their families to campus with Hotdogs and Lemonade on Friday, August 20, 11:00 am to 1:00 pm in the McCoy Mall area.

If you are interested in helping serve and greet our newest families to VCSU, please contact Rhonda Fairfield (37102) indicating the hour you are available. We will begin with set up at 10:30 am and tear down ending at 1:30 pm.

Melgaard to be Recognized at Reception
The Division of Business and Information Technology would like to invite you to a reception honoring Dave Melgaard, 2010 ACTE Outstanding Career and Technical Educator. The reception will take place on Tuesday, August 24, 2010, 10:30 am - 12:00 pm, in McFarland 138.

Join us in congratulating Dave on this prestigious honor.

National Leaders Coming to Support ND STEM Initiative

Jan Morrison, founder of the Teaching Institute for Excellence in STEM (TIES), is coming to North Dakota to deliver a public presentation in support of North Dakota's STEM initiative and VCSU's Great Plains STEM Education Center. The presentation will be held at 10:00 am, Monday, August 23 at the Pioneer Room of the State Capitol in Bismarck. Jan's presentation, entitled 'Advancing STEM Education in North Dakota,' will be focused on creating awareness and partnerships for advancing education reform in North Dakota through STEM education.

As the Executive Director of TIES, Jan Morrison provides vital support to National and State STEM initiatives most recently serving as the Senior STEM advisor to The White House and the U.S. Department of Education in development of their sweeping Race to the Top and Innovate to Educate education reform programs. Current engagements include Senior Consultant for STEM Education for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, NASA STEM education initiatives, Battelle Memorial Institute, the Philanthropy Roundtable, the National Governors Association, Innovate-Educate Mexico, the National Association for College Admission Counseling, the Lemelson Center at the Smithsonian and the National Academy of Engineering as it developed the SEEK-16 project.

Accompanying Jan that day will be Dr. Annalies Corbin, executive director of the PAST Foundation (Columbus, OH). The PAST Foundation is dedicated to changing the world of education to encompass transdisciplinary teaching and learning. Dr. Corbin's has a particular interest in working with Native American populations.

After the public presentation, Jan and Annalies have meetings planned with state officials, representatives of the ND University System, the Department of Public Instruction, the Educational Standards and Practices board, and the Department of Career and Technical Education.
