VCSU Alum Bill Lydell ('55) to Perform September 30

Jazz Pianist William Lydell, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, will perform a solo recital on the VCSU campus, in Froemke Auditorium, Thursday, September 30, at 7:30 pm. There is no admission charge.

Lydell holds the Bachelors degree in Music Education and English from Valley City State University; and the Master of Music (Piano) from the University of Michigan. He was born in Mercy Hospital while his father was employed as a member of the music faculty at the university.

Mr. Lydell's extensive musical background includes over 30 years as a public school music teacher in Minneapolis, 15 years as a church organist and choir director, and professional experience as a jazz pianist in clubs and on cruise ships. He has served as clinician and adjudicator for music festivals and contests through the upper Midwest and Arizona and as music editor for Schmitt, Hall, and McCreary Publishing. Lydell is perhaps best known as a composer and arranger, and to North Dakota audiences, for his performances with Lawrence Welk.

His piano style has been described as multi-faceted. It is lyrical yet energetic, tranquil yet full of verve and vigor. Working with some of the finest musicians in the Midwest, Lydell has gained a repertoire of over 300 tunes, including standards by composer greats such as Cole Porter, George Gershwin, and Rodgers & Hart.

Lydell, a loyal alumnus of VCSU, presents this fourth benefit concert for the Friends of Music scholarship fund: a free-will offering will be taken following the performance. Lydell's CD recordings will be for sale at the concert, and a reception will follow.

Technology Tip of the Week

Want to try something new, such as incorporating blogs in your classroom? Having the students create videos for YouTube? Incorporating a group writing assignment via Google Docs?

Are you hesitant to do so because of the time it takes to teach the students how to use this technology? Or that you may not know how to use the technology yourself?

You Tube and E-How have many tutorials on how to use various forms of technology. Search You Tube or E-How for tutorials, then provide links for your students to watch and create their own blogs, Prezis, videos ...
