McLain Exhibit Installed at VCSU Art Gallery

McLain Exhibit Installed at VCSU Art Gallery
Molly McLain's exhibition of mixed media work and photography is now installed in the VCSU Art Gallery and runs through November 24.

Molly graduated from VCSU in 2005 with a studio arts degree under the instruction of Linda Whitney, and a minor in piano pedagogy under the instruction of Beth Klingenstein.

Growing up on the prairie, she has always felt a connection to the land, and creates art centering on environmentalism and that connection, along with abstract oil pieces. Her current work centers on a maternal theme confronting modern agricultural practices and the consequences they have on the earth.

Molly resides in Minneapolis where she teaches piano and has recently been in residency teaching classes introducing Art and Agriculture for 3-5th graders at the Jamestown Arts Center Arts After School Program and color theory in the elementary schools.

There will be a reception for Molly, Thursday, November 4, 7:00 - 8:30 pm in the Gallery.

Lullabies and Carols for Christmas Recital Scheduled

Lullabies and Carols for Christmas Recital Scheduled
On Monday, November 29 at 7:30 pm, three faculty members from Valley City State University will present an evening of "Lullabies and Carols for Christmas" in Froemke Auditorium. Leesa Levy (BS in music education, MM and DMA in vocal performance and literature), Director of Choral Activities and Assistant Professor of Voice at VCSU since 1999 will be accompanied by Jaime Namminga, Instructor of Piano who joined the VCSU faculty last year. Assisting Dr. Levy on a set of French carols will be Jon Rudolph, Instructor of Guitar at VCSU since 2001.

The songs chosen for this recital feature both audience favorites and relatively unknown pieces that portray an intimate view of the birth of the Christ Child. Selections such as O Holy Night by Adolph Adams and Ave Maria by Franz Schubert will be interspersed with those by English and American composers, Michael Head, Roger Quilter and John Jacob Niles, among others. Many of the lesser-known songs have a touch of folk elements to them, making them highly melodic and approachable from an audience point of view.

The point of view of the poets who created the texts for the various selections is another element of the evening's entertainment that the audience should enjoy. Some of the song lyrics approach the event of the birth from the traditional "spread the news vantage point" but others provide an introspective look by the mother, Mary; visitors to the scene; and folks from our own society who wonder what it must have been like that night when the angels told of the birth of the King.

The audience is most cordially invited to share the event with the performers and enjoy an evening of music chosen to celebrate the season.

Wirth Presents at NDCTM

Wirth Presents at NDCTM
VCSU mathematics education instructor, Jamie Wirth, presented to a group of secondary math teachers on the use of the GeoGebra software at the North Dakota Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NDCTM) sectional of the North Dakota Education Association (NDEA) conference in Bismarck, ND on October 22.

GeoGebra is a free, dynamic mathematics software for all levels of education that joins geometry, algebra, tables, graphing, statistics and calculus in one easy-to-use package. Wirth's presentation included an introduction to the software and several examples/tips on how he implements the software into his classroom instruction.

According to Wirth, attendees of the presentation were quite impressed with the capabilities of the software and seemed eager to try it out in their own classrooms. Wirth plans on making a similar presentation to a larger

Technology Tip of the Week: Use Web 2.0 Tools!

Web 2.0 seems to be the topic of this week. Students use it daily. Why not incorporate it into your classroom? Put up a Question of the Day on Twitter and ask them to respond. Create a closed Facebook account and ask students to post current event articles related to the course and to discuss the topics. Have students practice professionalism by creating a professional profile in LinkedIn. When it seems like students may have drifted away with their laptops, throw out a bonus question and tell them to "google" the answer. Or have them try Poll Everywhere, where students can use their cell phones or twitter to answer a question.

Webinar on CD

Missed last week's webinar "Student Engagement and Web 2.0 in Blended Learning?" We have purchased the CD. It will be in the library next week so you can check it and the transcript out. A lot of great information came out of the webinar. For example, did you know that Blackboard usage is positively correlated with retention rates?
