Six VCSU Faculty Receive Mini-Grants

Six faculty were awarded mini-grants for their research/assessment projects at a November meeting of the Faculty Development Committee. These faculty are working on research projects in their interest areas or assessment projects needed by their department or divisions.

The faculty and their project names are:
Sarah Milner, Assessment – Assessment for Fitness & Wellness General Education Offering
Katie Woehl, Assessment – Assessment of Psychology Program Curriculum
Jonna Ziniel, Research – Breastfeeding in America: A Rhetorical Analysis of Mediated Images of Breastfeeding
Curt Hill, Research – Enhancing the Experience
Beth Gigante Klingenstein, Research – Ph.D. Dissertation: Perspectives of Community Members, Faculty, and Administrators When a University Eliminates its Music Degree.
Sara Hagen, Research – Using Theory Journals to Enhance Learning

Presentations on the results of these projects will be given in May at a Brown Bag session. The Office of Graduate Studies and Research sponsors the mini-grants.

Faculty interested in applying for a research or assessment mini-grant Spring semester for up to $500 may apply through the faculty development site. Look for "Forms" at the bottom on the left menu. Download the appropriate mini-grant application and return it as specified on the form. The deadline for spring applications is February 1.

Mercy Hospital Foundations Thanks VCSU

The Mercy Hospital Foundation would like to thank VCSU employees for their contribution to this year's Festival of Trees.

VCSU employees donated $160 which was used to purchase men's and women's items for two baskets in the silent auction area. Both baskets brought a nice donation to the annual event held Saturday, November 27.

Technology Tip of the Week: Games for Course Review

As we are reaching the end of the semester, why not take advantage of free game software in which to create reviews? Interested in Jeopardy? Millionaire? Hollywood Squares? Try this LINK . Or this LINK for a template. You could put students in groups and have them come up with the questions and answers, then play each others' games. The possibilities are endless ... and free!

Winter Safety and Tips

Think about walking!

Unfortunately, we do not think about how we are walking until after we fall. Follow these tips to help prevent a slip or fall during the winter:
Be attentive and make sure you know what conditions you are walking on.
Don't walk with your hands in your pockets. This reduces your balance if you slip on the ice.
Take short to medium steps or shuffle your feet in very icy areas.
Don't carry or swing heavy loads, such as large boxes or cases, which could cause you to lose your balance when walking.
When walking, curl your toes under and walk as flatfooted as possible
Don't step on uneven surfaces. Step well over or avoid curbs with ice on them.
Place your full attention on walking! Don't allow your attention to be divided by talking on the cell, getting your keys out of your pocket, digging in your pocketbook for items, etc., while walking on ice.
Weather causes icy conditions on the VCSU's public walks, parking lots, and roads. Facilities Services uses salt and sand to minimize slippery conditions.

Please report any hazardous conditions to Facilities Services at 3-7705.

For more Winter Safety Tips, check out VCSU's Safety webpage.

Energy Conservation Tip of the Week

At the office:

Use a power strip for convenience and to conserve energy.
To maximize savings with a laptop, put the AC adapter on a power strip that can be turned off easily; the transformer in the AC adapter draws power continuously, even when the laptop is not plugged into the adapter.
Common misconceptions can account for the failure to turn off equipment. Many people believe that equipment lasts longer if it is never turned off. This incorrect perception carries over from the days of older mainframe computers.

At home:

Save energy by unplugging appliances.
Many appliances continue to draw a small amount of power when they are switched off. These "phantom" loads occur in most appliances that use electricity, such as VCRs, televisions, stereos, computers, and kitchen appliances, and can be avoided by unplugging the appliance or using a power strip and using the switch on the power strip to cut all power to the appliance. This also includes battery chargers. Unplug battery chargers when the batteries are fully charged or the chargers are not in use.
