VCSU Concert Choir to Air on Prairie Public Radio

The 2009 performance of the Christmas at St. Kate's concert by the VCSU Concert Choir is scheduled to be rebroadcast on Prairie Public stations throughout North Dakota (except the Fargo repeater 91.9 FM) this Thursday, December 23 at 10:00 am. The best bet for reception in Valley City is to tune in to 91.5 FM (Jamestown), or, the broadcast should also be available at PRAIRIE PUBLIC online - click here for the link.

Skroch Attends NASM Conference

Skroch Attends NASM Conference
Department of Music Chair Dr. Diana Skroch attended the 2010 annual meeting of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) held November 13–19 in Boston, Massachusetts.

She attended a pre-meeting workshop entitled "Starting Entrepreneurial Programs: Distilling Concepts from Experience" which was largely devoted to attempts to define "entrepreneurship" and to review of the research attempting to define it. The general sessions were focused on the topic of "Creative Approaches to the Undergraduate Curriculum: Considering Content, Instructional Process & Learning." Member roundtables for small music units made it clear that VCSU Music is more developed than many other programs-in curricula, in technology, in management of "extra" student experiences (concert attendance). Other sessions she attended included "P-12 Teacher Retention-Policy Issues and Practical Steps for Schools and Departments of Music," "Distance Learning," and an open forum for smaller music units.

Zavala-Petherbridge Attends ACTFL Conference

Zavala-Petherbridge Attends ACTFL Conference
VCSU Spanish instructor Dina Zavala-Petherbridge attended the foreign language convention of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages in Boston, Massachusetts in November.

The ACTFL convention offered a variety of workshops and presentations to attend where language professionals shared news about the field.

Ms. Zavala-Petherbridge was selected by the ACTFL organization as an Initial Program Reviewer for the NCATE/ACTFL organization. After training, Ms. Zavala-Petherbridge was approved and will be collaborating as an evaluator for both organizations.

Holiday Tips 2010

It's the most wonderful time of the year busy with traveling, family, and celebration. Remember these tips to stay safe this holiday season:

1. Stay Healthy! With all of the hustle and bustle with seeing family and old friends, remember how important it is to wash hands frequently or carry a small bottle of hand sanitizer to help prevent the spreading of germs. Nobody wants a cold for Christmas!

2. Stay Warm! The holiday season wouldn't be complete without the snowing and blowing. If you will be outdoors for an extended time remember to wear layers of loose-fitting, tightly woven clothing.

3. Safe Travels! To protect yourself and loved ones, please remember to never, ever drink and drive and don't your loved ones drink and drive either. Always remember to wear a seat belt!

Have a safe and happy holiday!

Energy Conservation Tip of the Week

At the office:

Saving with office equipment.

· Turn off PCs, monitors, printers, copiers, and lights every night and when not being used. If you can' turn off the whole computer, turn off the monitor and printers.

· When purchasing PCs, monitors, printers, fax machines and copiers, consider ENERGY STAR models that "power down" after a period of inactivity. If appropriate, use laptop computers - they consume 90% less energy than desktop computers.

(Facts and information taken from: )

At home:

How can you make this a green Christmas at your house?

· Entertaining? Use fabric tablecloths and your usual china, glasses and flatware rather than disposables. If you do go the paper plate route, use recycled, recyclable or reusable plates. Choose paper towels, toilet tissue and cocktail napkins made with recycled fiber. At parties, provide separate trash containers for glass, plastic and metal.

· Wrap wisely. Buy recycled gift wrap. Or use something else: color comics, maps, kids' artwork, magazine pages, recycled gift bags (you do save the gift bags you receive, right?), fabric remnants and scarves.
