Thank You for Supporting the Auction!

Thank You for Supporting the Auction!
by Dr. Steve Shirley, Valley City State University President

The following article will appear in the Valley City Times Record the Week of May 2, 2011.

Last Friday night, VCSU held its 17th Annual Scholarship Auction. The Auction is the largest one-day event with the sole purpose of raising scholarship funds for VCSU students. All dollars raised Friday night are split equally between the V-500 program for academic scholarships and the Century Club for athletic scholarships.

For the second year in a row, the Auction was sold out with over 500 tickets sold. Thanks to everyone who purchased a ticket and attended the event. With the ticket sales, games, live and silent auctions, and other contributions, we anticipate surpassing last year's record of $60,000. This amount would exceed last year's record and represent the most successful auction ever held at VCSU.

On behalf of VCSU's students, faculty, and staff, thanks so much to the individuals and businesses that supported the Auction. Your donations, purchases, bidding, participation, and sponsorship is so very appreciated and key to making the event successful. VCSU's ability to attract and retain talented students is dependent in part on the scholarships we offer. We held two new-student registrations with high school seniors last month and for the second year in a row are expecting a large incoming freshmen class in Fall 2011. Coupled with this year's freshmen class, these will be the two largest back-to-back incoming classes of students at VCSU in nearly a quarter of a century. Therefore, your support toward ensuring a strong scholarship base is critically important now as much as ever. Your contributions to scholarships will help VCSU continue to attract the very best and brightest students to further enrich not just the campus, but the entire community.

A big word of "Thanks" goes to the members of the Auction Committee who put in so much time and effort ensuring a successful event. These Committee members sold tickets, solicited donations, promoted the event, decorated at the Eagles, and contributed in a variety of other ways. The Committee consists of Rhonda Fairfield, Mary Bostrom, Tara & Tom Glandt, Kim & Wade Hesch, Alison Kasowski, Loree Morehouse, Patti Rickford, Tara Praska, Joy Smith, Trish Lueck, Susan Kolbow, Jack Denholm, Toyin Oladosu, Don Schaack, Stephanie Roelfsema, Larry Robinson, Kari Stricklin, and James Thornton – a huge Thanks for all of their efforts!

Additionally, a word of thanks to VCSU's Alumni and Foundation Office and the Athletic Department for their efforts, and specifically to Kim Hesch for the dedication and commitment she provides in coordinating and leading the overall Auction effort. Kim puts in countless hours ensuring the event is a 'well-oiled machine,' and it clearly pays off! Also, there are many volunteer members who serve on the V-500, Booster, Alumni, and Foundation Boards of VCSU who put in much effort to make events such as the Auction a success.

The support of community members at events such as the Scholarship Auction helps ensure a strong and successful student enrollment at VCSU that is so important to the success of our community and region. We are already looking forward to the 2012 Auction! On behalf of the entire VCSU campus – THANKS to everyone who supported the Auction.
