Historical Society Lecture Series Season 14 Kicks Off

The Barnes County Historical Society Lecture Series Season 14 presents Ellen Bjelland, NDSU Extension Agent, who will present "North Dakota Food and Culture" on Thursday September 22, at 7:00 pm at the Barnes County Museum.

As the kick off to the visit of the Smithsonian Institution's traveling Exhibit "Key Ingredients, American Food Ways," this presentation will give a glimpse into the many cultures that are here in North Dakota and how they shape our state and the food we consume.

Ellen Bjelland is a native of Tagus, North Dakota, a tiny town a half hour west of Minot. She has been with the NDSU Extension Service in Barnes County for over 13 years. Prior to that she worked for the UW-Extension Service in Sauk County, Wisconsin. She holds a B.S. in home economics education from NDSU and a master's degree in human development and family studies from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Work interests include educational programming related to parenting, finances, and wellness.

All Lectures are at the Barnes County Historical Society Museum and held in conjunction with Valley City State University. They are free and open to the public. For more information contact Wes Anderson at 701-845-0966.

Skroch to Present Lecture September 29
Valley City State University Professor, Dr. Diana Skroch will present a lecture on her travel to Rapa Nui (Easter Island), Island of Mystery, on September 29 at 7:00 pm at the Barnes County Historical Museum.

On a recent trip to South America, Diana Skroch and Joe Stickler travelled to Easter Island (Easter's Hanga Roa has the most remote airport in the world). The evening's lecture will include information about the origins of the island's population, the enormous stone statues (moais) which have intrigued and mystified the world, the collapse of Easter's culture, and the conclusions drawn by today's authors and scientists.

Dr. Skroch, who describes herself as a passionate traveler, is Chair of the Department of Music and the Division of Fine Arts at Valley City State University.

Preview of the Dakota State Football Game

The Viking Football team hosts Dakota State this Saturday at 6:00 pm at the newly renovated Shelly Ellig Field. The Vikings have played the Trojans nine times since 2004 and have won eight of the meetings including 54-10 and 62-39 Viking victories last season. Dakota State enters the contest at 0-3. Viking Athletic Update

Viking Athletic Update
The Viking Football team was victorious Saturday as they defeated Dickinson State in dramatic fashion by a score of 28-26. Tommy Zinke connected with Nick Schoenecker on a 5 yard pass as time ran out, The Vikings currently stand at 1-1.

The Viking Volleyball team competed at the Viterbo tournament and came away with a 1-3 record, they current hold a 4-9 mark on the season. They travel to Dickinson State on Wednesday.

The Cross Country team competed in the Randy Smith invitational, top runner on the men's side was Jesse Dorado with a time of 27.25 and for the women's it was Anna Fuka with a time of 24.22.

The Viking Golf teams competed at the Bismarck State Invitational. Top scores for the men were Taylor Henrickson and Matt Sorenson who both shot a 81. On the women's side, the top performer was Ashley Hinrichs who tied for 17th place.

Upcoming Home Events

The Volleyball team will host South Dakota School of Mines on Friday, September 16 at 7:00 pm and Black Hills State on Saturday, September 17, at 2:00 pm in Graichen Gym.

The Viking Football team will take on Dakota State University Saturday, September 17, game time is 6:00 pm.
