VCSU Viking Club Tennis Team Finishes Second

VCSU Viking Club Tennis Team Finishes Second
The Viking Club Tennis team finished second overall in the USTA Northern Section Tennis On Campus Series and will take that standing as the second seed into the Sectional Championship tournament, February 25 and 26 in Lakeville, MN.

The top two teams out of that Sectional Championship will then advance to the National USTA Tennis On Campus tournament in Arizona in March. This is the best finish for the Viking Club Tennis team since its creation in 2004, improving from a eighth seed at the tournament last year in which we finished fifth overall.

Final standing from the USTA Northern Section can be found at this site.

Pictured are freshman Josh Gilbertson and Erika Lutjens in the mixed doubles round at the Carleton College Knight Invite, the last tournament of the season, in which the club finished fourth.

van Gijssel Attends EMS Meeting

van Gijssel Attends EMS Meeting
Associate Professor Dr. Hilde van Gijssel participated in the 42nd annual meeting of the Environmental Mutagen Society (EMS). van Gijssel has been a member of this organization since 2001.

The focus of the conference was about the effects of chemicals in the environment on the human genome. This has been van Gijssel's field of research for the last 20 years and this conference provides the opportunity to hear about the latest developments in the field. Highlights of the meeting included a symposium about the genetics of autism and a symposium about the evaluation of the effects of the Deep Water Horizon oil spill.

In the last three years, van Gijssel has been part of the governance of this organization. She has served as the Chair for the Education, Students, New Investigators Affairs committee, which puts her in charge of organizing the poster and platform competition. Through this activity, van Gijssel had the opportunity to meet many graduate students and new investigators about their research. This year she also started her three-year term as council member for EMS. The first meeting was held during the conference.

Bremer Foundation Funds Anti-Racism Workshop

Communication Arts instructors Dina Petherbridge and Rob Walsh received a grant from the Bremer Foundation to attend Understanding and Dismantling Racism, a three-day intensive workshop at North Dakkota State University. Other attendees were from North Dakota State University, Univeristy of North Dakota, Minnesota State University-Moorhead, Concordia College, White Earth Tribal & Community College, and Minnesota State Community & Technical College-Moorhead. Trainers from the Minnesota Collaborative Anti-Racism Initiative (MCARI) facilitated the recent workshop.

MCARI provides anti-racism training for non-profit institutions, business and community organizations, and institutions of higher education. The purpose of MCARI is to help organizations address racism as a systemic issue. MCARI's role is to engage institutions in anti-racism education, training and organizing, and build institutional capacity to recognize and respond to systemic racism through a process of institutional transformation (mcari.org).

James Attends AASL Conference

James Attends AASL Conference
Library Director Donna James and library education faculty at Valley City State University attended the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) conference in Minneapolis, MN last week.

The conference entitled Turning the Page centered around the emerging role of the school library media specialist as a teacher and collaborator. James attended sessions including those which outlined the AASL recognition process, the information literacy transition between K-12 and college, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) 21st Century Librarian Grant Program.

VCSU has been awarded two IMLS grants in the last five years. The most recent grant, Collaborate 21, is intended to familiarize school administrators with the integral role that a strong school library program plays in student success.

Senior Art Exhibition Installed

Senior Art Exhibition Installed
Angela Morford's senior art exhibition is now installed in the Valley City State University Art Gallery.

The exhibition of large-scale acrylic paintings is in the Gallery on the third floor of McCarthy Hall. Hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 am -9:00 pm. A peer presentation lecture will take place Monday, November 14 at 7:00 pm in McCarthy 356. An artist's reception and talk is scheduled in the Gallery on Friday, November 18 from 4:30 to 6:00 PM.

"The process (of creating these pieces) has definitely been a journey, and one without a predicted end," says Morford. "Through surrendering to the canvas, incorporating formative aspects of balance and line, and with much patience, I have developed a process of layering marks, textures, and color to create this body of work." Morford is an Art Education and Elementary Education major from Bismarck, ND.

The Exhibition runs through Friday, November 25.
