Dr. Shirley Named to

Dr. Shirley Named to
Valley City State University President Dr. Shirley was selected to be included in Prairie Business magazine's "40 Under 40" feature in their December issue.

The feature comprises a list of top business leaders under the age of 40 who readers of the magazine say are making a difference in our region. Dr. Shirley was selected by the magazine's editorial board with assistance from Lisa Gulland-Nelson, Communications Coordinator for the Greater Fargo Moorhead Economic Development Corporation, and Dwaine Chapel, Executive Director of the Lake Area Improvement Corporation in Madison, SD. The magazine is available now, or you can read the article online by clicking PRAIRIE BUSINESS.

Tickets are available for $18 from the Foundation Office and include reserved seating for the EBC Fraternity's "We're in the Christmas Mood" concert which begins at 7:30 pm in Vangstad Auditorium. The concert is also open to the public for a free-will donation; canned goods will also be collected for area food shelves.

Republican U.S. House Debate to be held in Vangstad

Vangstad Auditorium will be the location for the first debate of the North Dakota's Republican candidates for the U.S. House. The event will be held Wednesday, December 14 at 6:30 pm, and will be moderated by Chris Berg, host of AM-1100's "We the People" radio show. VCSU Assistant Professor Rick Ross is serving as the event chairman (outside of his affiliation with VCSU). The debate is open to the public.

Russell Attends NCTE Conference

Russell Attends NCTE Conference
Valley City State University professor Dr. Julee Russell recently attended the 100th annual National Council Of Teachers of English (NCTE) conference in Chicago, IL. The purpose of attendance was two-fold. First the annual required training sessions for Lead Program Reviewers is held during the conference. There were two training sessions. Dr. Russell has been reviewing English education programs since 2005 and has been a Lead Reviewer since 2007. The reviews involve determining the degree to which English education programs meet the NCTE national standards.

The second purpose for attending the conference was to attend sessions pertinent to Dr. Russell's teaching assignments here at VCSU. The most significant session addressed the use of graphic novels in secondary school classrooms. Dr. Russell has been using graphic novels in two VCSU courses for several years, and the ideas presented at the conference provided excellent input for those courses.

While North Dakota is an NCATE state, many institutions across the country require that their education programs be "nationally recognized" by the discipline specific agency. Currently, Dr. Russell is one of 19 Lead Reviewers in the United States. There are 69 "team reviewers" who work with the Lead Reviewers to write reports on the programs submitted to NCTE/NCATE.

Continuing the

Campus Recycling Efforts

At the Environmental Task Meeting on December 1, the group discussed the need for more recycle bins across campus. Facilities Services will be placing a new set on 1st floor Vangstad (near the classrooms) and a smaller set will be added to the 3rd Floor McFarland Faculty/Staff lounge.

Facilities still has smaller bins available that can be placed in lounges/break rooms or similar areas. If you would like a set of these bins in your area, contact Facilities Services.

Did you know ...

Did you know you can recycle cardboard at VCSU? To do so, break down boxes by making them flat and place them in the collection site located in the lowest level of McFarland Hall. The specific location is in the walkway to the out side door on the south side of the hallway.

IDea Corner

After a short break IDea Corner is back and will now be part of the weekly Hotline and will also be found on the Instructional Design tab in Blackboard

The G generation

The students we have today are different in many ways than the students of even ten years ago. They never knew a time before the Internet and email. They prefer to play video games over watching TV and they prefer to text over making a phone call. They expect immediate access to information and can focus on several things at once. The TED talk by Gabe Zichermann helps shed light on this next generation and serves as starting point about how we are going to meet the needs of these students.

A discussion board topic in Instructional Design in Blackboard will begin soon. Please join the conversation with your thoughts on the TED talk and how we can motivate our students today. CLICK HERE to connect to the TED talk line.

Building a Better VCSU!

The Rhoades Science Center (RSC) project has been progressing right along. For an added level of safety, a chain link fence was delivered to the site and will be installed next week. Please continue to use caution while traveling through the construction site.

The construction crews continue to work through this more than ideal weather and will be pouring the concrete footings next week. Let's continue to hope for excellent weather to keep the project moving along!

Don't forget to check out the project website for updates and live feed camera: Click Here!

Campus Safety/Security

In the past two months, a series of "Campus Safety Walks" were done with the Student Senate, Staff Senate and the Faculty Senate (on December 6). The purpose of this activity is to identify any outdoor, with a focus on nighttime, safety concerns of the campus community.

During these walks, Facilities/Safety personnel explain improvements that have been made concerning security cameras and lighting including additional outdoor security cameras, wall packs for additional lighting all across campus, and sidewalk repairs. The Facilities/Safety office will continue to take suggestions for improvements.

Cleaning Directive Reminder

Two weeks ago, an email was sent regarding the cleanliness and overall appearance of campus. Next week, Ron Pommerer, Risk Management Contact, will be going around campus to meet with individual's named in the Annual Risk Management Audit report. Again, we are asking that the areas that have been identified as a health, fire or safety risk be cleaned by December 31. If you need extra help cleaning or would like an evaluation done of your area, please contact Facilities Services.
