Dr. Vitaliano Figueroa – VCSU's new VPSA

Dr. Vitaliano Figueroa – VCSU\'s new VPSA
by Dr. Steve Shirley, Valley City State University President

The following article will appear in the Valley City Times Record the week of June 25, 2012.

Last week, Dr. Vitaliano Figueroa began employment at Valley City State University as the new Vice-President for Student Affairs. In this role, Vitaliano replaced Mr. Glen Schmalz who resigned his position earlier this year.

Glen has served the VCSU campus wonderfully during a career that spanned more than three decades. Glen and his wife, Sharon, recently relocated to Fargo. Not only did Glen graduate from VCSU (and was a student-athlete during his college days), but he also served in a variety of important positions during his VCSU tenure including coaching, admissions, counseling, Dean of Students, and ultimately Vice-President for Student Affairs. Glen was a tremendous asset to VCSU and positively impacted many students over the years; he will certainly be missed on campus and throughout the community.

The Vice-President for Student Affairs (VPSA) function at VCSU is integral to both the daily operational activities of the campus as well as with the long-term goals associated with various strategic objectives. The VPSA role has responsibility for several important university functions related to student success, and requires an individual with the appropriate breadth and depth of skill sets to successfully carry out the required duties.

The VPSA is responsible for such areas as Enrollment Services, Financial Aid, Residence Life, Career Services, the Student Union, the Bookstore, Counseling Services, Student Academic Services, New Student Orientation, the Student Senate, and other important student life areas throughout campus. The VPSA also works closely with other entities such as the North Dakota University System office, the campus Dining Services contractor (Sodexo), and local authorities with any student conduct matters that might arise.

We are pleased to welcome Dr. Vitaliano Figueroa to VCSU as he transitions here from the College of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas where he served for the past seven years as the Director of Student Life, Leadership Development, and Student Conduct. Prior to his tenure at the College of Southern Nevada, Dr. Figueroa also served in various student affairs capacities at Santa Ana College (CA), American Career College (CA), and the University of Rhode Island.
Vitaliano earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science degrees at the University of Rhode Island, and he earned his doctorate in Educational Leadership from Argosy University. Please join me in welcoming Vitaliano, his wife Daisy, and their children Vitaliano and Isabella as they transition to North Dakota and the Valley City community. Welcome Dr. Figueroa and Family!

Welcome planned for new VPSA

Please join us in welcoming our new Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Figueroa & his family to VCSU at a Welcome reception on Monday, July 2 from 10:00 – 11:00 am in the Division of Business Student Lounge.

Valley City State University composition/Woodwind Instructor Dr. Jorge Variego applied for, and was awarded, a Professional Development Grant from the North Dakota Council on the Arts along with additional assistance provided by Valley City State University.

This state-funded grant program is designed to benefit artists by providing financial assistance for informational/educational opportunities relating to the arts and arts development. For arts organizations, this program aids in staff/board/volunteer training opportunities or for hiring consultants and technical or artistic directors.

The grant will provide funds for Variego to record, edit, and master of a CD exclusively of works for clarinet and electronics by contemporary composers. A concert and a master class are also part of this project. Variego will be attending the summer 2012 CMMAS (Centro Mexicano para la Musica y las Artes Sonoras) conference located in Morelia, Mexico.

The CD will be distributed in Argentina, USA, and Europe, expanding the reach CMMAS, fostering the creative endeavors of North Dakota-based artists and stimulating the collaboration between international institutions dedicated to contemporary music. "This grant will help me grow as an artist and a creative person," says Variego. "My work will benefit greatly from my participation at this conference."

Jorge Variego is a composer and performer from Argentina who obtained his master's degree with double major in composition and clarinet performance from Carnegie Mellon University where he attended as a Fulbright fellow. He holds a PhD in music composition from the University of Florida, Gainesville and a Juris Doctorate equivalent from the National University of Rosario, Argentina. He recently released his first solo CD, "Necessity," with the Albany records label from New York, to several outstanding reviews.
