Stenson recognized with Staff Member of the Quarter award
VCSU President Dr. Steve Shirley and his Cabinet presented Charlene Stenson, director of Enrollment Services, with the Staff Member of the Quarter award for the third quarter of 2012. The award recognizes ongoing and continued actions or behaviors furthering the vision and mission of the University. This marks the first time this new award has been presented.

Charlene was nominated by Alison Kasowski, assistant director of annual giving. In the nomination form, Alison said, "Charlene cares about VCSU as much or more than any employee on this campus-this is evident through her rapport with students and alumni, strong work ethic and passion. Her passion and spirit for VCSU is contagious, and she is a fabulous leader for her staff. Charlene is an ambassador for this university, and she makes it a better place with her presence."

If you would like to nominate a staff member for the Staff Member of the Quarter award, the nomination forms can be found at the Recognition at VCSU page. The deadline for the next award is December 15, 2012.

Teresa Cole receives "The Difference is Me" Award

Teresa Cole receives \
Teresa Cole received "The Difference is Me" award on Thursday, September 27. She was nominated for her work in the Great Plains STEM Education Center. In the nomination, David DeMuth wrote that "Teresa has been holding down the GPSEC fort as Dr. Mugan moved into retirement this past spring, working closely with Gary Ketterling, and the Tech Ed staff to ensure that three granted programs stayed on track, preserving the mission of the Center, and the campus. In my short time at VCSU, her input has been indispensable as I transition into the role Dr. Mugan held so well. Teresa clearly makes a Difference in the success of the GPSEC at VCSU and is deserving of the 'Difference is Me' recognition and award."

If you would like to nominate a staff member for "The Difference is Me" award, the nomination forms can be found at the Recognition at VCSU page.

Walsh, Ziniel attend CSTAND

Division of Communication Arts and Social Science instructor Rob Walsh and assistant professor Jonna Ziniel attended the Communication, Speech and Theater Association of North Dakota (CSTAND) annual convention and conference in Bismarck, ND on September 13 - 15.

During the conference, both Walsh and Ziniel participated in a panel on travel abroad programs. During this panel, Walsh shared his international experience in South Korea assisting undergraduate and graduate students to study abroad in English-speaking countries, including a master's and doctoral level exchange program between KAIST and Carnegie-Melon University. Ziniel presented on travel abroad programs and shared her own experiences of travel abroad. She was also given the title of a book that she plans to share with her future Intercultural Communication classes.

Both also participated in a second panel titled "Service Learning from the Student Perspective" in which students from North Dakota college and university campuses gave voice to past service learning projects. Walsh and Ziniel discussed service learning at VCSU including the squash harvest, work with Books for Soldiers, as well as a PR project with other campuses across ND.

Ziniel's other activities at the conference included delivering a presentation on incivility in the classroom. During this session, she discussed the student-written syllabus and how it is used in class. She also found a helpful "FAQ" that UND uses to answer common questions that professors have about incivility. This FAQ included who to contact for different occurrences both in and outside of the classroom. She has shared this hand-out with her department, division, and other offices on campus. In a session on low attendance, she shared strategies for addressing low attendance including insightful strategies she has already incorporated into her own class.

Blackboard tip of the week

Viewing and Grading by Question:

You may choose to view and grade tests by question. This allows you to jump from test to test, viewing and scoring the same question for each student. Doing this you can save you time by concentrating on a single question. It also allows you to see how all students responded to the same question giving you an at-a-glance picture of how they all did on that one question.

1. In the Grade Center, locate the column header of the test you want to grade.
2. Open the contextual menu and select Grade Questions.
3. On the Grade Questions page, you can filter the questions by status: Graded, Needs Grading, or In Progress, if there are many questions.
4. Click the number under Responses by the question you want to grade.
5. On the Grade Responses page, expand the Question Information to view the question.
6. Click Edit by each student response to grade it.
7. Type the Score. Optionally, you can add feedback in the text editor.
8. Click Submit.
9. Click Back to Questions when all student responses are graded.
