Owen presents at AAACE Conference

Owen presents at AAACE Conference
Valley City State University instructor Jackie Owen presented at the annual conference of the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education, November 5-9. Participants in her session, "Developing and Sustaining the Gifted Adult Learner," examined prominent definitions and characteristics of giftedness, including the concept of "overexcitabilities" -- a component of Dabrowski's Theory of Positive Disintegration (Dabrowski, 1964, Daniels & Piechowski, 2009; Mendaglio, 2008) as it relates to the study of giftedness in adults.

Owen reframed giftedness as it pertains to adult learning experiences. Characteristics of adult giftedness beyond IQ were discussed. The presentation included a synthesis of current studies of gifted adults as people, workers, leaders, and lifelong learners. Contents of the presentation lead to posing the questions: "In what ways might knowledge of gifted adults be useful to the field of adult learning?" and "How might we develop and sustain the gifted adult learner?"

Conference sessions attended by Owen included sessions on technology, blended learning, writing across the curriculum, and millennial learners.

Ramos attends Art Basel

Ramos attends Art Basel
Valley City State University Assistant Professor Armando Ramos attended Art Basel in Miami Beach, Florida earlier this month. Art Basel is one of the most prestigious art fairs, consisting of over 260 exhibits sponsored by leading galleries and museums from North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa.

Current trends in art and design are showcased at this event, giving artists and galleries a dynamic opportunity to explore the most contemporary artworks and offer a fantastic experience. Ramos had the opportunity to meet with artists, educators, and designers from all over the globe, discussing current concepts and trends in the fine arts. Ramos also attended lectures and met with designers at Design Miami, a secondary conference that was simultaneously being held in conjunction with Art Basel.

Professor Ramos found great inspiration in the exhibits and is eager to share the newest innovations and ideas in the arts with his students.

Thank you ---

The COMM 114 Human Communication class would like to thank the campus community for generously contributing to our drive for Books for Soldiers.

In total, we were able to send out 14 LARGE boxes that were stuffed full of books and other goodies! This drive could not be successful without your help! Not only did the soldiers benefit, but the students did as well while working on each aspect of the entire campaign!
