Summer 2013 has been busy at VCSU!
by Dr. Steve Shirley, Valley City State University President
The following article will appear in the Valley City Times-Record the week of July 22, 2013.
As another summer fades by and Valley City State University prepares to welcome students back for the 2013-14 academic year, I want to share a few of the many activities that have occurred at the VCSU campus this summer. Oftentimes I hear from individuals who ask, “Is anything happening on campus this summer?” As you will read – it has indeed been yet another busy summer for students, faculty, staff, and countless visitors to the VCSU campus in Summer 2013.
There were approximately 550 graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in classes at VCSU throughout the summer months. These figures have been remarkably steady during each of the past three summers with overall summer enrollments at nearly identical figures each year. There have also been many efforts by campus personnel involved with several New Student Registration and Orientation sessions. These one-day sessions acclimate incoming Fall 2013 freshmen to VCSU, and throughout the sessions we have welcomed hundreds of new freshmen and their families to campus. We anticipate another strong incoming new class of students in 2013 and look forward to having them on-campus full-time in just a few weeks.
In addition to summer classes and Registration/Orientation sessions, there have also been a large number of camps, workshops, meetings, and symposiums on campus that have brought students, teachers, alumni, and guests to VCSU. These have included various football and basketball camps, the Business and Information Technology (BAIT) camp, STEM workshops, Prairie Waters activities, VCSU Alumni and Foundation meetings, professional development events for teachers, and a host of other activities. Collectively, these events have brought thousands of visitors to VCSU and the Valley City/Barnes County region this summer.
During the past couple months there have also been some important construction activities at the VCSU campus. Certainly the most notable project has been the finishing efforts in completing the $10.3 million renovation and expansion of Rhoades Science Center. The final details, landscaping, and “punch list” items are now being completed, and the center will fully open when students arrive next month. Additionally, there have been major remodeling projects in the lower levels of McFarland Hall and Osmon Fieldhouse this summer, along with numerous other smaller renovations and upgrades throughout campus. Architects and engineers will soon be selected for the forthcoming renovation to Vangstad Auditorium and the two classroom/office levels below the auditorium, as well as for the hillside slope mitigation project behind McCarthy. We are also preparing for a renovation to the historic President’s House.
Fall student-athletes will soon be returning to campus with VCSU volleyball and football team members arriving in a couple weeks. Teaching faculty will be back on contract on Monday, August 19, and freshmen move into the residence halls on Friday, August 23, with classes beginning the following week. It has undoubtedly been another busy summer across campus, and we are excited to welcome everyone for the start of the 2013-14 academic year at Valley City State!
