Higher Education Funding Committee to meet on campus Wednesday

On Wednesday, Nov. 20, VCSU will host a meeting of the North Dakota Legislature’s Higher Education Funding Committee. The meeting will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the Student Center’s Skoal Room and will last most of the day.

The agenda for the meeting can be found at www.legis.nd.gov/assembly/63-2013/interim/15-5047-02000-meeting-agenda.pdf.

L2L Symposium to be held Thursday

The service-learning projects of the 14 groups of freshmen in the Learning to Live, Living to Learn course will be featured in a symposium Thursday, Nov. 21, from 11–11:50 a.m. in Graichen Gym. The groups will each have their own exhibition space to present their projects in a variety of ways, including posters, photos, and multimedia presentations.

This year’s project topics included VCSU athletics website analysis, free public computer lessons, Medicine Wheel Park experience and maintenance, campus sharing of personal cultural diversity, raising recycling awareness, introducing the public library to young readers, creation of self-motivational videos for college success, and a bullying prevention workshop and hand-washing clinic for elementary school students, among others.

All are invited to attend the symposium.

Emerging Leaders Conference set for Thursday and Friday

The Business Department’s first annual Emerging Leaders Conference is scheduled for Thursday and Friday, November 21–22.

The conference begins on Thursday at 3 p.m. with keynote speaker Kostas Voutsas, an author, corporate trainer, motivational speaker and assistant professor of business at Dickinson State University. At 4 p.m. kick-off speaker Sandy Kjelvik, vice president of human resources with Discovery Benefits, will present 360-degree leadership. Students will then experience dining etiquette with a dinner, followed by a fashion show sponsored by New York and Company, and Men’s Warehouse.

Friday’s sessions begin at 8:30 a.m. with a meet and greet, followed by breakout sessions with speakers Kayla Gefrow and Ted Cox from Microsoft and Casey Stoudt from Stoudt Motors. Closing the conference is Greg Allen from Cavendish Farms.

The conference is sponsored in part by DECA and SHRM.

VCSU group attends Minnesota ASUG conference

VCSU group attends Minnesota ASUG conference
Eleven Valley City State students—accompanied by VCSU’s Susan Pfeifer, computer systems and software engineering department chair, and Jamie Paurus, academic alliance coordinator—attended the Minnesota Chapter ASUG (Americas’ SAP Users’ Group) Conference in Minneapolis, Nov. 6.

VCSU students attending were Logan Berg, Tyler Swenson, Deven Lemer, Trek Wilhelmi, Marshall Hopp, Donlee Donnelly, Ben Clifton, Nick Hines, Rob Klein, Jose Garcia and Derek Jacobs. Students attended presentations from corporate IT leaders in the area of change management as well as presentations in SAP ALM, BusinessObjects, Tech and User tracks. They also participated in multi-topic breakout sessions and a networking reception.

On Friday, Nov. 8, the group toured Thomson-Reuters, where VCSU alumni Ryan LeNoue and Kodee Ussatis presented on their utilization of SAP. The group then visited Deluxe Corp., where they discussed the importance of new employees entering the workforce with SAP experience and knowledge.

Over 95,000 companies in over 120 countries run SAP software—from distinct solutions addressing the needs of small businesses and midsize companies to suite offerings for global organizations. VCSU is the leading university in several surrounding states participating in the SAP University Alliance program.
