Woehl’s simulated dementia lab featured in Forum article

Woehl’s simulated dementia lab featured in Forum article
A dementia simulation lab used in Katie Woehl's abnormal psychology class at VCSU is featured in the Fargo Forum today (Monday, Dec. 16).

Written by Meredith Holt with photos by Carrie Snyder, “A Walk in Their Shoes: Dementia Simulation Lab Helps Students Understand the Disease,” appears on the front page of the She Says section.

Woehl, VCSU assistant professor, uses the lab to help students better understand what it feels like to have dementia.

VCSU staff receive awards

VCSU staff receive awards
Wayne Hammond and Jenn Larson were recently honored with VCSU’s “Difference is ME” award.

Hammond, Building Services staff member in McCarthy Hall, and Larson, FMC assistant, were nominated for their work in support of the university. Thanks, Jenn and Wayne, and congratulations!

Planetarium hosting special event

Planetarium hosting special event
The Valley City State University Planetarium will host a special event, “Chasing the Aurora,” with VCSU alumnus Durand “Duke” Johnson at 7 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 19, in ‪Room 309 of Rhoades Science Center‬.

In March 2013, Johnson—education/exhibits manager at the Clark Planetarium in Salt Lake City, Utah—spent nearly two weeks in pursuit of the dazzling light show in Canada’s far north. Braving temperatures as cold as -40° F for up to eight hours at a time and trying to keep photographic gear working at those temperatures proved to be challenging.

The presentation, free and open to the public, will be full of amazing photographs, along with a 10-minute real aurora video taken with a fisheye lens that provides the best sense possible of an active aurora night.

Pool open over holiday break

The VCSU swimming pool in the Student Center will be open on select days over the holiday break.

The pool will be open Monday, Dec. 23; Thursday, Dec. 26; and Friday, Dec. 27, from 12 noon to 1 p.m for lap swim and from 1 to 3 p.m. for open swim.

Remember—all faculty and staff family members swim free!
