Season’s Greetings from VCSU!

Season’s Greetings from VCSU!
by Dr. Steve Shirley, Valley City State University President

The following article will appear in the Valley City Times-Record the week of December 23, 2013.

This time of year is an important one for reflecting upon all for which we have to be thankful. It also provides the opportunity to review the past year while also anticipating the year ahead. This is a special time for visiting loved ones and spending time with family and friends who we may only see once or twice a year. Of course, in this part of the world it is also the time of year when the long winter days are upon us and we have limited daylight, cold temperatures, and plenty to shovel! It most certainly is a beautiful season with crisp air, newly fallen snow, and opportunities to enjoy outdoor winter activities. It is important to recognize the gifts for which we can be thankful, and we are fortunate to be surrounded by many such aspects that make Valley City State University such a special place.

VCSU is fortunate to have a wonderful team of dedicated faculty and staff who are committed to educating the students we serve. Like most organizations, our people are the heart and soul of everything we do in moving VCSU forward. Their support, dedication, and commitment to VCSU’s students and the campus mission are at the very core of what makes this such a special University and such a family atmosphere. In fact, we often refer to it as the “VCSU Family.”

The University is of course also comprised of a wonderful group of students full of excitement, energy, enthusiasm, determination, and a commitment to learning. These students make our efforts so worthwhile as they represent the future leaders, teachers, scientists, artists, business professionals, and community members who will lead our society. It is a special gift to be surrounded by these talented students on a daily basis.

We are also thankful for the strong group of alumni and supporters who are dedicated to helping VCSU succeed. The campus is grateful to the many individuals who volunteer of their time and talents to serve on boards and committees important to the University, as well as to our many friends who financially support the students of VCSU through their scholarship donations. We are also fortunate to enjoy a strong working relationship with the Valley City and Barnes County communities. VCSU is an important member of the community, and the community is an important component to VCSU’s success….this interconnection has all the markings of the perfect “win-win” relationship!

This is indeed a special season and I hope you all have the opportunity to share some time with loved ones, family, and friends. I wish you all a Merry Christmas, a Happy Holiday Season, and all the very best in 2014!

Ramos attends Art Basel in Miami Beach

Ramos attends Art Basel in Miami Beach
Armando Ramos, VCSU assistant professor of art, attended Art Basel in Miami Beach, Fla. Art Basel, held Dec. 5–8, is one of the most prestigious art fairs, with more than 260 exhibits sponsored by leading galleries and museums from North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa.

Ramos had the opportunity to meet with artists, educators and designers from all over the world, discussing current concepts and trends in the fine arts. He also attended lectures and met with designers at Design Miami, a secondary conference held simultaneously with Art Basel.
