Ong performs recital in Malaysia

Ong performs recital in Malaysia
Geraldine Ong, assistant professor of music, performed a solo piano recital, “Piano Potpourri,” at Toccata Studio in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, Jan. 4. According to Ong, the event was well attended by local and international music lovers, allowing her the opportunity to get acquainted with the Malaysian classical music community. She aspires to be more involved in that community in hopes of bringing talented musicians to Valley City.

Ramos does residency at Red Lodge

Ramos does residency at Red Lodge
Armando Ramos, assistant professor of art, participated in a short-term artist residency at Red Lodge Clay Center in Red Lodge, Mont., in December. Red Lodge Clay Center provides a place for professional ceramic artists to create new work and hosts visiting artist workshops, lectures, demonstrations, exhibitions and educational programming. At the Clay Center, Ramos participated in the group exhibition Good Things, which runs through the end of January. He also gave a lecture and demonstration on his studio practice and created a new body of work focusing on slip-cast ceramic forms. Some of the work created at the residency appears in the VCSU Faculty Exhibition running in McCarthy; some can also be seen on the Red Lodge Clay Center website at

Hoff attends AAPT conference

Don Hoff, professor of science, attended the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) annual conference Jan. 4–7 in Orlando, Fla., as the North Dakota section representative. He represented North Dakota at the section officers meeting, the section representatives meeting and the AAPT council meeting. Updates and/or decisions were made concerning review and recommendations on implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS); science/physics instruction and teacher preparation at K-12, two-year college, and university levels; AAPT budget; and future meeting sites and dates. Hoff also visited environmentally sensitive sites along the waterways of central Florida.

Brister takes in MLA convention

J. Gregory Brister, assistant professor in the Department of Communication Arts, attended the Modern Language Association Convention in Chicago Jan. 9–12, where he presented a paper on Joyce’s Ulysses with the panel “New Approaches to Psychology and Modernism.” In addition to attending interesting sessions hosted by the James Joyce and Virginia Woolf Societies, he found Diane Ravitch and Gerald Graff’s debate during “The Common Core State Standards: Their Past, Present, and Future” particularly interesting, given VCSU’s involvement with the Core Standards “Vertical Alignment” program last summer.

VCSU alumnus Dillan Ostrom ’13 will appear on MTV's “Are You the One?,” a reality show which premieres Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 10 p.m. Filmed in Hawaii, the show features 10 men and 10 women looking for their perfect match.
