Email to Campus from Health Services 2/27/20

Feb 27, 2020

Dear campus community:

As in any cold and flu season, and with recent attention on the Coronavirus (COVID-19), the most important things to do to keep yourself healthy are:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • If you are ill it is important to stay home!
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Most importantly, wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

The greatest risk for our employee and student population remains influenza. As of 2/26/2020, there have been AT LEAST 174,037 positive Influenza cases in the United States, with 8,965 positive cases in the State of North Dakota.

It is not too late to get your flu shot! Students can schedule an appointment with City County Health District by calling 845-8518. Staff, faculty and distance students should check with their healthcare provider.

According to the CDC, for the general American public, the immediate health risk from COVID-19 remains low at this time. As of 2/26/2020, there have been 15 positive cases of COVID-19 in the United States, with NO confirmed cases in the State of North Dakota.
The CDC reports that Coronavirus symptoms of fever, cough and shortness of breath will appear in as few as 2 days or as long as 14 days after exposure. It is not necessary to wear a mask for protection if you are not showing any of the symptoms described above. People of concern would include health care workers or individuals with symptoms AND who have traveled from mainland China OR have been in close contact with a known positive Coronavirus patient. If you believe you have been exposed to Coronavirus and require medical attention, contact your healthcare provider prior to your appointment.

The CDC website is an excellent resource for frequently asked questions and up-to-date information regarding the Influenza and Coronavirus. CDC website: https://www.cdc.gov.
