COVID FACT FRIDAY: Updated Quarantine Guidelines

The CDC has issued new guidance reducing the number of days close contacts will need to quarantine following an exposure to a COVID-positive individual. The following options to shorten quarantine are acceptable:

  1. Quarantine can end after Day 7 if the person has reported no symptoms during daily monitoring and tests negative using a diagnostic test (PCR or rapid antigen).
The test can be collected 48 hours before the time of planned quarantine discontinuation, but quarantine cannot be discontinued earlier than Day 7.
  2. Quarantine can end after Day 10 if a person opts out of testing/testing is not available and the person has reported no symptoms during daily monitoring.

However, in both of options, close contacts must continue to self-monitor for symptoms, wear a face covering and practice social distancing for the full 14 days even though they have been released from quarantine at 11:59 pm on Day 7 or at 11:59 pm on Day 10.
