COVID FACT FRIDAY: Updated Quarantine Guidelines
The CDC has issued new guidance reducing the number of days close contacts will need to quarantine following an exposure to a COVID-positive individual. The following options to shorten quarantine are acceptable:
- Quarantine can end after Day 7 if the person has reported no symptoms during daily monitoring and tests negative using a diagnostic test (PCR or rapid antigen).
The test can be collected 48 hours before the time of planned quarantine discontinuation, but quarantine cannot be discontinued earlier than Day 7. - Quarantine can end after Day 10 if a person opts out of testing/testing is not available and the person has reported no symptoms during daily monitoring.
However, in both of options, close contacts must continue to self-monitor for symptoms, wear a face covering and practice social distancing for the full 14 days even though they have been released from quarantine at 11:59 pm on Day 7 or at 11:59 pm on Day 10.
