VCSU Returning Student Scholarship applications due Feb. 15

Please help spread the word by reminding returning students to apply for their scholarships. The application deadline is Feb. 15.

Giving Hearts Day this Thursday

staff and faculty holding Giving Hearts Day signsThe VCSU Foundation is one of over 500 charities that will be participating in Giving Hearts Day on Feb. 11.

Gifts made on Giving Hearts Day to the VCSU Foundation’s Annual Fund help support scholarships and other Alumni Association initiatives, including The Bulletin, alumni socials, reunion events and alumni award programs. On Thursday, Feb. 11, donate $10 or more at giving heartsday.org by choosing the VCSU Foundation and your donation will be matched up to $5,000!

Donations can be dropped off anytime between now and 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 11 at the VCSU Foundation Office. If you drop off your check before Feb. 11, please make sure the check is dated and you have referenced Giving Hearts Day in the memo section in order for the donation to be counted for the match. Klingenberg receives Glenn Dolan Award

Erin holding award with balloonsErin Klingenberg, Ph.D., director for counseling services was awarded the Glenn Dolan Award by the North Dakota Counseling Association in Jan. 2021. The Glenn Dolan award recognizes a counselor that has made outstanding contributions to their organization, has excellent rapport with the community and fellow employees, who actively participates in community functions and organizations, and provides extensive service and leadership to the community. Klingenberg is an excellent and knowledgeable leader in her field. She helps make a difference in her clients, students, and fellow employees lives and it is an honor to have her be a part of the VCSU family.

Klingenberg will be recognized at the North Dakota Counseling Association award ceremony during their annual conference on Feb. 7-9, 2021.

VanHorn publishes article in National Communication Association magazine

portrait of Shannon VanHornShannon VanHorn, Ph.D., communication arts has an article published in the National Communication Association’s online magazine, Spectra.  This edition looks at the effects of Covid-19 in education. VanHorn’s article, “Addressing Classroom Communication post Covid-19: Challenges and Changes” discusses the effects the pandemic had on higher education, as well as how the ramifications of it will further influence teaching at the college-level.

The National Communication Association is comprised of more than 8,000 communication educators, researchers, and specialists from throughout the world. Its mission is advancing Communication as the discipline that studies all forms, modes, media, and consequences of communication through humanistic, social scientific, and aesthetic inquiry.

COVID-19 testing events this week at the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse, “The Bubble”

Free COVID-19 testing events for the VCSU and Valley City communities will be held this week from 1-2 p.m. at the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse, “The Bubble”. Rapid and conventional testing will be offered at each event on Feb. 8, Feb. 10 and Feb. 12.

These are WALK-IN testing events. Colder temperatures have moved operations indoors. If you wish to be tested, please park your vehicle and enter through the west entrance. Handicap parking spaces and access are available at the east entrance. Preregistration at testreg.nd.gov is encouraged; one only needs to register once.

Vikings sports update

Men’s Basketball

Friday: Viterbo University 91, VCSU 81

Saturday: VCSU 78, Waldorf University 71

The VCSU men’s basketball team posted a 1-1 record on the road this weekend. The Vikings are now 16-5 overall and 7-4 in conference play – tied for second in the NSAA standings with three conference games remaining. VCSU hosts Bellevue University and Dakota State this weekend. 

Women’s Basketball

Friday: Viterbo University 74, VCSU 70

Saturday: VCSU 73, Waldorf University 70

Valley City State’s women’s basketball team went 1-1 this weekend, including a 73-70 win over Waldorf. The Viking women are now 7-10 overall and 5-6 in conference play. VCSU hosts Bellevue University and Dakota State this weekend. 

Track & Field

Alex Otto hit the national qualifying standard in the men’s high jump this weekend as VCSU track and field competed at the Dickinson State Invite. Otto cleared 2.03 meters – 6 feet, 8 inches – and is now ranked 11th in the nation. The Top 16 athletes in each event qualify for the NAIA National Championships. Otto was one of six Vikings to win events this weekend.

Softball

Valley City State University softball will play its season opener this weekend during a tournament at the Presentation College Dome in Aberdeen, S.D. The Vikings start the 2020 season on Friday, Feb. 12, with games against Dordt University (12 p.m.) and Morningside College (2 p.m.). Valley City State University will also play two games on Saturday. Attendance at the games is restricted. The tournament is limiting attendance to 20 family members per team, who must be on the team’s pass list.
