Freewill Brat Feed at VCSU softball games on Wednesday

The Valley City State softball team has designated Wednesday’s home doubleheader against Mayville State a Cancer Awareness Game.

The Vikings host Mayville State on Wednesday, April 21, at 1/3 p.m. Fans are invited to a brat feed during the games for a freewill donation. All donations will go towards supporting the American Cancer Society.

The meal will include brats, chips and water. Thank you to Rick Ross, the VCSU Century Club, the VCSU Alumni Association and Sodexo for supporting this event.

Moderna Vaccine Clinic at VCSU this Wednesday

A Moderna Vaccine Clinic will be held in the VCSU Student Center Skoal Room on Wednesday, April 21 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. This clinic is available to everyone, ages 18 and up. Health insurance is not required to be vaccinated.

Students are encouraged to register even if they will not be in Valley City to receive the second dose (starting May 19). Public Health recommends starting the vaccination series now, then getting the second dose upon returning home.

Koch's senior exhibition, ‘Exploration’ on display in McCarthy Gallery

Landscape by Zoey Koch

“Exploration,” is the upcoming senior exhibition of Valley City State University student Zoey Koch.

Her exhibition will be on display in McCarthy Gallery from Monday, April 19 – Friday, April 30. Zoey Koch’s artist talk will be held virtually on April 29 at 11 a.m. Listen to the Artist Talk live on the VCSU Vikings YouTube Page and the VCSU Art Department Facebook Page.

Inspired by her experiences traveling, her paintings show scenes from both far away and close to home. Koch captures the rich color of the landscape to let the viewer journey there too. Color brings Koch joy, and she wants the same experience for the viewer.

Zoey Koch is the daughter of Natalie Koch and was raised in Valley City. She graduated from Valley City High School in 2016.

While she was an art student at VCSU, Koch worked with many great faculty members. She would like to express her thanks for their guidance over the years.

After graduation, Koch’s future plans are to earn her MFA.

VCSU to hold 26th Annual Scholarship Auction on May 21

26th Annual VCSU Scholarship poster

The 26th annual Valley City State University Scholarship Auction will be held Friday, May 21, at the Valley City Eagles Club. The cancellation of last year’s event due to the COVID-19 pandemic inspired the “Better Together” theme for this year’s event. Attendees are encouraged to dress in VCSU attire to show their true Viking pride.

Auction tickets are $60 each, which includes admission, two drink tickets, dinner and five chances to win $100 (need not be present to win).

“We are excited to be able to hold our scholarship auction this year.  A few things will look different, but the fun will be the same,” said Kim Hesch, assistant director of advancement at VCSU. “With our record enrollment this past fall and spring, it is important that we have a successful auction. The Scholarship Auction is a collaborative effort of the VCSU Booster Board and V-500 Board with proceeds going directly to scholarships.”

The social hour and virtual silent auction will begin at 5:30 p.m. In order to make the event safer and allow for social distancing, the silent auction will be made available on the Handbid app, which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play Store. After downloading, participants can follow the prompts to create an account, then choose “VCSU Scholarship Auction 2021” from the list. Users can monitor their winning and losing bids from the dashboard, receive notifications when they have been outbid, and checkout within the app at the end of the night. Participants need not be present to win.

The evening will also feature popular raffle giveaways, the chance to purchase bottles of wine at the Mystery Wine Table and a new game, Spin the Wheel, for a chance to win a variety of gift cards and other promotional items.

The dinner will be served at 6 p.m. with live auction to follow at 7 p.m. This is an opportunity to bid on great items while contributing to scholarships, offering some financial relief for future and current VCSU students.

Auction items are currently being solicited for the event. Anyone wishing to donate an item can contact the VCSU Foundation office. As the event approaches, a list of silent and live auction items will be made available on the website.

For more information regarding the VCSU Scholarship Auction, to purchase tickets, or to donate an item, call the VCSU Foundation Office at 701-845-7203.

Larson named ‘Staff Member of the Quarter’

Paula Larson receiving award from cabinet members

Paula Larson, administrative assistant for art and music, was recently named “Staff Member of the Quarter.”

Her nomination read, “Paula has recently taken on the additional duties of providing administrative support for the art department as an expansion of her duties in the music department. She has done so with professionalism and enthusiasm as both departments begin transitioning to the new Center for the Arts. These duties include budgetary tracking, Foss Hall scheduling, and the creation and dissemination of promotional materials for both departments. Paula is great to work with, and completely deserving of this award.”
