Valley City State University To Host Eastern Dakota Conference Music Contest

500+ Students To Participate in Percussion and Wind Instrument Music Categories on Dec. 2

Valley City, ND – Valley City State University (VCSU) will host the 2021-2022 North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA) Eastern Dakota Conference (EDC) music contest for wind and percussion soloists.

The contest begins at 8 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, at Foss Music Hall. More than 500 soloists are expected to participate. Faculty from VCSU are helping facilitate and judge the event.

“We are so happy to host this event and bring musicians from so many excellent schools to our campus,” Jerrold Heide, Chair of the VCSU Music Department, said. “It will be a busy day for our faculty and staff as we help conduct the contest, but it’s a great way to help students learn and perform.”

High schools participating in the contest include Wahpeton, Fargo Davies, Shanley, Fargo North, West Fargo, Grand Forks Red River, Grand Forks Central, West Fargo Horace, West Fargo Sheyenne, Fargo South, Valley City and Devils Lake.

“As a musician and President, I’m so happy to welcome these high school students to our community,” VCSU President Dr. Alan LaFave said. “We are excited to host this event again in the future in our new Center for the Arts.”

VCSU offers multiple degrees relating to music including a Music Education Bachelor’s Degree and a Bachelor’s Degree in Music with Audio Production Concentration and Performance Concentration. The University also offers multiple music related minors including Music Audio Production and Piano Pedagogy.

Capital Campaign update

VCSU’s Capital Campaign is making good progress and recently surpassed the $5,000,000 mark in pledges and cash received. The campaign officially kicked off in February 2020, but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Actual solicitation in the field of donor prospects began in November 2020. The professional campaign consultant has advised us that we are on track for a successful campaign.Forward Together logo

The Capital Campaign Task Force has identified 270 prospects to be contacted during the course of the campaign. Task Force members include Phil Mueller, Dick Gulmon, Al LaFave, Cory Anderson, Dennis McCulloch, Jill Devries, Dave Bass, Bob Bergan and Larry Robinson. Folks interested in supporting the campaign can make a pledge payable over a 5 year time period. Contributions are tax deductible.

The Forward Together Campaign is the first ever Capital Campaign in the history of Valley City State University. The Campaign Planning Committee focused on capital priorities for the university that are actual “needs” and not “wants”. Those priorities include a major addition to the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse, renovation of McCarthy Hall into the School of Education, improvements to the Memorial Student Center, and additional support for our scholarship programs. The campaign is intended to respond to critical needs of the university and to position VCSU for the future. According to Larry Robinson, Capital Campaign Director, “We need to remember that this campaign is a process and not an event. We must work hard and be persistent to insure success.”

Anyone interested in contributing to the campaign should contact the VCSU Foundation Office. All contributions, big or small are important.

VCAB donates to APOC

Viking Campus Activities Board (VCAB) donated $500 to the Abused Persons Outreach Center (APOC) on Tuesday, Nov. 9.

“Thank you,” says Renee Ronsberg, APOC employee, “for the time and effort put into organizing and putting on Shatter the Silence.” Shatter the Silence is an annual fall semester event put together by the Valley City State University (VCSU) Student Senate. The event raises awareness about domestic abuse, relationship violence, and survivors. This year, VCSU student clubs and organizations were invited to host different activities over three days, to support the Shatter the Silence message while promoting their groups.

VCAB, a VCSU club that plans activities and events on campus, had a night of bowling at Sky Lanes on Wednesday, Oct. 20. Every spare and strike made meant $1 or $2 added to the final APOC donation. Students, staff and faculty showed up in force, with over 60 bowlers coming together to raise the money.

To make your own donation to APOC or learn more, visit their website.

Follow VCAB and Student Senate on Instagram to learn more about their work at VCSU.
