First instrumental concert in Center for the Arts
The public is invited to the first concert in the Center for the Arts. The Mid-Winter Instrumental Concert will take place this Friday, Feb. 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall. Both the Concert Band and Jazz Combo will peform music by Ployhar, Holsinger, Oare, Hanson, Coltrane, Rodgers & Hart, Dorham and Ellington.
VCSU Faculty & Staff Art Exhibition opens Feb. 16
The VCSU Art Department is excited to host the first exhibition in the new Center for the Arts. The biennial Faculty and Staff Art Exhibition will kick off on Feb. 14 and run through March 25.
The opening reception will take place on Feb. 16 from 2:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. in the Center for the Arts Gallery and lobby area. Live entertainment will be provided by the VCSU Jazz Ensemble and woodwind chamber music group.
Angela Mircsov, art department chair and gallery director said, “The exhibition is a recognition to our faculty and staff across campus presenting the diverse talent VCSU has. We hope to bring everyone together to celebrate the opening of the Center for the Arts.”
The Forge deadline extended
The deadline to submit entries to The Forge has been extended to Wednesday, March 9 at 12 a.m. midnight.
Each writing entry must be submitted as a Word document. Any images must be attached in JPEG form (at least 300 dpi). Submit entries to theforge@vcsu.edu.
Participants can submit up to 5 entries total. Please include a title page with the following for each submissions: name, title of entry, category of entry. There should be no visible signatures on artworks so they can be judged anonymously.
Submissions have been in the following categories: short fiction, poetry, drama, academic/personal essay, drawing/painting, printmaking, ceramics/sculpture, photography/digital imaging.
William Egan senior recital set for March 11
The VCSU Music Department will host the senior recital of William Egan, baritone, on Friday, March 11 at 7:30 p.m. The program will consist of music by Georges Bizet, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Benj Pasek, Justin Paul, Frederick Loewe, Stephen Schwartz, and a nine-song set by Gustav Holst. Egan will be accompanied by Sarah Larsen, piano.
The Enderlin, North Dakota native is a senior music and elementary education major studying under Anthony Rohr, assistant professor for music. During his time at VCSU, he has participated in Concert Band, Athletic Band, Wind Ensemble, Concert Choir, Opera Ensemble, and University Singers. He has also performed as a soloist during the VCSU showcase recitals at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. William will student teach in the fall semester and graduate in December 2022.
A livestream will be available to view on the VCSU Music Department’s Facebook page. The recital will be held in the concert hall at the Center for the Arts with a reception afterwards.
VCSU Foundation raises $31,890 on Giving Hearts Day
The Valley City State University Foundation & Alumni office is happy to announce that 264 generous donors raised $31,890 for Giving Hearts Day this year, surpassing the original goal of $29,000. Those dollars will be used to help VCSU students through scholarship support in addition to hosting alumni gatherings, award programs, Homecoming activities, and the alumni newsletter The Bulletin.
Fenster attends human services conference
Emily Fenster, associate professor for sociology, attended the 2021 National Organization for Human Services (NOHS) national conference held online October 20-22. The theme of the conference was “Call for Unity: Sustaining Wellness, Hope, and Community,” and attendees included educators, practitioners, and students in areas related to human services. She attended sessions on a wide range of topics, including: fostering wellness in student internship experiences; the connection between ethics and self-care; ethical leadership; and options and considerations for virtual case management.
Viking Sports Update
Men’s Basketball
Feb. 11: VCSU 81, Bellevue University 73
Feb. 12: VCSU 69, Dakota State 65
The VCSU men’s basketball team won two road games last weekend and are now 16-10 overall and 7-6 in conference play. The Vikings host Dickinson State on Friday.
Women’s Basketball
Feb. 11: Bellevue 78, VCSU 55
Feb. 12: Dakota State 91, VCSU 57
The VCSU women’s basketball team is now 9-14 overall and 6-7 in conference play. VCSU hosts Dickinson State on Friday in the season finale.
Softball
Feb. 11: Dordt 2, VCSU 0; VCSU 5, Jamestown 1
Feb. 12: Northern State 9, VCSU 1; College of Saint Mary 3, VCSU 2
The Viking softball team earned a victory this weekend against the University of Jamestown, winning 5-1. The Vikings now have a 3-5 overall record. VCSU plays four more games at the Presentation College Dome this weekend.
Track & Field
The Valley City State track and field teams set three school records and won 17 out of the 25 events Friday during a dual at the University of Jamestown. The Viking women won the dual, 70-47, while VCSU’s men lost in a close points race, 71-61.
