Where are you working right now?
I am currently a fifth grade teacher at Rita Murphy Elementary in Bismarck.
Why did you choose to attend VCSU?
I chose VCSU because it felt like a perfect fit for me, and it was even close to my hometown. As soon as I stepped on campus, I felt like I was already welcomed to my new home. I met people right away that were already in my major and they inspired me to be like them. VCSU also has an excellent elementary program, so I was very excited to attend!!
How did VCSU help shape and prepare you for your current position?
VCSU helped shape me into a strong and confident leader. At VCSU, I took up many leadership roles that helped me gain more confidence with those around me. Throughout my time in the elementary program, I had several opportunities to put my skills to use in actual elementary classrooms, which helped me prepare for my career. Before I graduated, I was able to go over my cover letter, resume and interview questions so I knew exactly what to expect when applying for jobs. By the time I graduated, I felt like I was well prepared and equipped for my job field.
Why would you encourage prospective students to attend VCSU?
I tell all my students that VCSU is the best school in the land! With the small class sizes at VCSU, you are not just a face, but a name. Professors know you personally and you are better able to form connections with those around you. Also, the campus is small, so you can walk to your classes quickly without being in the cold for too long!
What did you value most about your time at VCSU?
I valued meeting so many people at VCSU! I made many lifelong friends at VCSU and have so many memories that I cherish with them. Living in the dorms, too, was an experience that I will never be able to forget. I also valued the time my professors took to shape me into the teacher I am today. I could not have done it without their support and motivation.
Anything else you’d like to tell us about VCSU and your time here?
Make the most out your time at VCSU! Join clubs, participate in activities, eat in the caf and support all campus events. The more involved you are, the better college experience. And remember to have fun and get your homework done!
