Teacher and Student Advocate of the year selected

VCSU’s Student Senate has announced the 2023 award recipients for Teacher of the Year and Student Advocate of the Year. On April 26, senators presented Taylor Mounts with the Teacher of the Year award and Janna Kohler with the Student Advocate of the Year award.

Taylor Mounts receiving award from senators

Mounts joined faculty in 2021 as an assistant professor of business. In nominations, students spoke about Taylor’s passion for feedback within her classroom and her visibility around campus. Her willingness to alter her instructional style for the betterment of her students makes them feel cared for and ensures optimal understanding. The high energy Taylor brings to her lectures, the consistent value she crafts into her assignments, and the deliberate pacing of her curriculum made students choose her to receive the TOY award.

Kohler came to VCSU in 2022 to serve as the director for career services. In nominations, students spoke about the major changes Janna has made to her office’s functionality and visibility around campus. Students praised her for her outreach through email and social media has helped shed light on community needs and student opportunities. Students feel empowered to visit her and use her as a valuable resource while they prepare themselves for professional opportunities. With stellar response times and a genuine concern for students’ success, students felt she deserved the Student Advocate of the Year award. Janna Kohler receiving award from senators

Her nomination read, “Angela, assistant professor for art, works tirelessly to promote VCSU, art, her students and the campus community. Angela has initiated the virtual artist talks from visiting artists and VCSU students to promote the art gallery not only to those that can visit in person but those following on social media. Angela also started the Friends of Art to connect with art alumni and raise funds for scholarships and visiting artists. She has embraced Valley City and organizes events for campus employees to gather, network and learn more about each other on a personal level. She helps with Viking visit days and willingly visits with prospective art students. Angela knows all of the art students and works to find them internships and other opportunities to help them grow their portfolios and experiences for their future careers. Even though the art department has moved to the Center for the Arts, we regularly see Angela in the McFarland hallways visiting with the various offices and spreading her cheer and positivity. She is truly present!”

VCSU DECA students attend and place at ICDC competition

DECA members Jennifer Keller, Ryan Orner, Kiara Radke and Chloe Anderson represented VCSU and the state of ND, competed in the 2023 International Career and Development Conference Competition (ICDC) held in Orlando, Fla. on April 15-18. Taylor Mounts, assistant professor for business, accompanied students on the trip. Both the students and faculty attended workshops, opening/closing ceremonies, competed and judged during the event.

Radke and Anderson competed together in the Business Ethics Team Decision event in which they were presented a case study challenge and given an hour to come up with their decision and presentation. The team was called to the stage as a finalist with being one of the top 19 teams to make it to the final round. They again were given a quick turnaround competition time and when their time was up they gave another decision and presentation. The team was again called to the stage as top 10 finalists in the event that night at closing ceremony and it was announced that they had received 5th place.

Keller and Orner competed together in the Business-to-Business Team Decision event in which they were presented a case study challenge and given an hour to prepare a response and presentation based on the case study. The team was earning excellence status but just missed out on finals.

A great opportunity arose for Mounts in which she was asked to judge an entrepreneurship event. The opportunity to judge at an international event is exciting and allows faculty to showcase their expertise. It also provides a great learning opportunity as a judge to see expectations and learn things to bring back to the local levels. Dr. Amber Aberle was unable to attend ICDC this year but is the DECA program advisor and will soon finalize her 20th year as a DECA advisor.
