Online Auction for Reserved Parking Spots Begins This Week!

Ever dreamed of having your own reserved parking spot at VCSU?

This is a unique opportunity to purchase a reserved parking spot that would be yours exclusively from August 2010-August 2011. You get to choose the spot in any of VCSU's parking lots. Facilities Services has offered two parking spots to auction off as part of our Scholarship Auction fund raising effort. If you are the successful bidder for a parking spot, we'll furnish a personalized reserved parking sign. What a great way to raise money for scholarships and reserve a front row spot for yourself!

The online auction starts at 12 noon on Tuesday, April 13 and ends at 12 noon on Tuesday, April 20. Let the bidding begin!

The Valley City Chamber of Commerce is holding the first meeting of the Legislative Affairs Committee next Monday, April 19 at 7:30 am in the Skoal Room of the VCSU Student Center. The purpose of the meeting is to allow Chamber members an opportunity to provide input to our local delegation, including Senator Larry Robinson and Representatives Phil Mueller and Ralph Metcalf, in preparation for the biennial legislative session. Hoskisson & Clark Present at SITE Conference

Dale Hoskisson and Dan Clark recently presented at the International Conference of the Society for Information Technology in Teacher Education (SITE) in San Diego. The conference hosted over 1,100 educators from 56 countries.

Dale and Dan were co-presenters for their paper entitled "The Case for Instructor Presence Faculty-Driven Standards of Excellence for Online and Technology-Enhanced Courses," outlining the philosophy behind VCSU's standards of excellence, the development process, and its ongoing implementation.

Dan presented his paper on "Ambiguity Intolerance and the Adult Online Learner," which explored how adult learners perceive and process information when confronted by an array of unfamiliar, complex, or incongruent clues in innovative or atypical learning environments.

Dale and Dan attended many presentations and round-table discussions on topics including: "Effective Online Teaching," Assessment and e-Portfolios, Universal Design for Online Learning, the TPACK Model for Technology Integration, Writing Presence in Online Pedagogy, Instructor Immediacy, Digital Natives and Digital Immigrants , and the Distributive power of Online Instruction. Faculty interested in seeing the papers from these (or any other SITE) presentations are encouraged to contact Dale or Dan.

STEM/Tech Ed Faculty Participate in International Conference

James Boe, Don Fischer, Don Mugan, Peder Gjovik, and Roger Skophammer (a new Assistant Professor in Technology Education starting Fall semester) attended the International Technology and Engineering Educator's Association (formerly ITEA) annual conference in Charlotte, North Carolina on March 18-20. The conference theme was Green Technology: STEM Solutions for the 21st Century Citizens. This conference annually brings together Technology Education instructors from over 20 nations.

Faculty from Technology Education and STEM participated in numerous interest sessions and seminars related to STEM education and current research in the field. Technology Education faculty also serve as chairs for the Teacher Excellence Awards and are charged with organization of the award presentations during the conference opening ceremony. This year, they presented recognition awards to 33 teachers from across the United States for excellence in teaching.

During the three-day conference, faculty from the programs met with Dr. Yvonne Spicer from the Museum of Science and Luke Rhine from the Maryland Department of Education to strengthen partnerships. The faculty also maintained a booth in the conference showroom for marketing and recruiting in the graduate and undergraduate programs. Numerous contacts were made with potential students and partner institutions.

The conference will be held next year in Minneapolis, Minnesota and will be a great opportunity for the VCSU Technology Education and STEM faculty to present findings from doctoral research and methodologies developed through the STEM Initiative. The conference theme for 2011 is "Preparing the STEM Workforce: The Next Generation."

Ramos Spends a Week in Philadelphia

Ramos Spends a Week in Philadelphia
From March 31 to April 4, Armando Ramos traveled to Philadelphia to the annual National Council on the Education of the Ceramic Arts or (NCECA) conference. NCECA works in two parts, the conference itself has lectures by emerging artists and established professors who speak about new methods and technologies surrounding ceramics as well as workshops and demonstrations. The second part of the conference is exhibits held in galleries around the host city. Approximately two hundred exhibits from student shows to graduate work to curated museum shows are dedicated to the ceramic arts.

Ramos found that visiting the exhibits and seeing all the different work was the most exciting thing about the conference. One of his favorite exhibitions this year was a show that focused on production pottery or pottery in which artists have taken a line of work and made it accessible for mass production. It was inspiring to see the interesting and beautiful forms artists are creating for mass production. Seeing the availability of simple inexpensive ceramics will hopefully encourage all of us to dispose of our paper and plastic dishes and find some pottery that fits our fancy.
