VCSU's presence felt at the CTE Conference

Valley City State University was highly visible at the 42nd annual Professional Development Conference of the North Dakota Department of Career and Technical Education, held last week at the Ramkota Hotel in Bismarck.

During the first General Session, the Northern Information Technology Consortium (NITC), of which VCSU is a member, received the Director's Award of Excellence. The NITC is a collaboration among colleges and universities pertaining to the delivery of courses and degree programs in Information Technology. Other members of the NITC include Dakota College at Bottineau (DCB), Lake Region State College, Turtle Mountain Community College, and Williston State College. One product of this collaboration is an articulation agreement between VCSU and DCB that allows students who have completed an Associate in Applied Science degree in Information Technology from DCB to earn a Bachelor's degree with a major in Computer Information Systems (CIS) from VCSU. The NITC was recognized for extending educational opportunities for IT students, supplementing distance delivery lectures with local labs and software simulations, and responding to input from advisory committees to increase enrollment and completion in IT programs.

In addition, VCSU alum Megan (Nodland) Wald '07 was named NDACTE New Educator of the Year. Ms. Wald is a business education instructor and FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) advisor at Linton High School. Her recognition in the conference program states, "As a dedicated and skilled business teacher, Megan demonstrates excellent classroom management skills and a good rapport with her students. She has given the business education program new focus. The FBLA chapter is involved in local, state, and national activities with several FBLA students qualifying for national competition in San Antonio. Megan chaired one of the planning committees for the recent MPBEA conference." While at VCSU, she was also an office assistant for Professor Dave Melgaard, who was VCSU's Career and Technical Education Coordinator and was named the Outstanding Career & Technical Educator at the NDACTE Annual Professional Development Conference in 2010.

Also, VCSU alum Paul Keidel '87 led the LEGO Robotics Symposium, which featured robotics experts from North Dakota and across the country. Paul is the STEM Coordinator for the Bismarck Public Schools, provides professional development for STEM subject areas, and is responsible for integrating STEM initiatives into the curriculum.

VCSU also is offering graduate credit to participants in the Symposium as well as the conference as a whole.

Dutton attends NAME Summer Institute

Dutton attends NAME Summer Institute
Anthony Dutton attended the National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME) Summer Institute at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois, June 28-30.

The theme of the institute, "Addressing the Demographic Imperative: Recruiting and Preparing a Diverse and Highly Effective Teaching Force," brought together teacher educators, primary and secondary school teachers and administrators, and community activists to work to address the imbalance of teachers of color in relation to the percentages of students of color.

One of the primary goals of NAME is to improve the recruitment and retention of students of color in teacher education programs. Dutton attended as part of the Valley Partnership group, including NDSU and MSUM, and was funded by the Bush Grant.
