New Faculty at VCSU in 2013-14

New Faculty at VCSU in 2013-14
by Dr. Steve Shirley, Valley City State University President

The following article will appear in the Valley City Times Record the week of September 2, 2013.

In my last column, I introduced four new full-time faculty members who are joining Valley City State University this fall. Today I will introduce you to the remainder of our new instructors and professors for 2013-14.

Emily Fenster joins VCSU as an assistant professor of Sociology. Emily will graduate with her Ph.D. in Social Gerontology later this year from Miami University (Oxford, Ohio); her Master’s in Gerontological Studies is from Miami (Ohio), and her Bachelor’s in Sociology is from the University of North Dakota. Emily has experience teaching at Miami University (Ohio), and her research interests are in such areas as aging, retirement planning, marriage, and technology integration in education.

Dr. Geraldine Ong will be an assistant professor of Music, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of Dr. Diana Skroch. Dr. Ong earned her Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance from the University of Houston, her Master of Music in Piano Performance from Northwestern University (Evanston, Ill.), and her Bachelor’s in Music from Missouri State University (Springfield, Mo.). Geraldine has experience teaching at the college level, has been an active solo and chamber performer, and she has an extensive history providing private piano lessons for a variety of ages.

Andrew Allen joins VCSU as an instructor of Music (Woodwinds). Andrew is currently completing his Doctor of Musical Arts in Saxophone Performance from the University of South Carolina (Columbia, S.C.). Andrew earned his Bachelor’s in Music Education from Tennessee Tech (Cookeville, Tenn.) and a Master of Music in Saxophone Performance from Central Michigan University (Mount Pleasant, Mich.). Andrew is an active performer of solo and chamber music and has university-level teaching experience in woodwinds and related courses.

Morgan Keasler joins VCSU as an instructor of Human Resources in Business. Morgan earned her Master’s in Human Resource Education and Workforce Development from Louisiana State University (Baton Rouge, La.), and her Bachelor’s in Psychology from Iowa State University (Ames, Iowa). Morgan has experience working in Human Resources for Hennepin County (Minn.) and the State of Louisiana, and also served as a graduate assistant while at LSU.

Heidi Larson joins VCSU as an instructor of Business. Heidi is currently working on her Ph.D. in Education from North Dakota State University. Heidi earned her MBA from the University of Mary (Bismarck), and has a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology and a Doctor of Chiropractic, both from Northwestern Health Sciences University in Bloomington, Minn. Heidi has previously taught for Jamestown College, and she also has a background as a chiropractor as well as experience with other private sector business endeavors.

Please help welcome these individuals, along with all of the new VCSU employees and students, to Valley City as we move forward with the 2013-14 academic year.

Gold cards on sale now!

The Valley City State University football team will begin its annual sale of Gold Cards on Monday, Sept. 2.

Gold Cards cost just $15 and qualify the holder for discounts at numerous businesses and restaurants in the Valley City area. Cards can be purchased from any VCSU football player.

On the evening of Sept. 12 the football team will conduct its annual Gold Card Blitz, wearing their jerseys and going door-to-door in the community selling the cards.

All funds raised from the sale of Gold Cards support the VCSU football program.

VCSU-connected golfers dominate Town and Country Club tourney

VCSU-connected golfers dominate Town and Country Club tourney
All eight golfers qualifying for the championship flight of the Valley City Town & Country Club Match Play Tournament held the weekend of August 17 had VCSU ties.

The top half of the bracket featured Viking golfer Sean Krall, the No. 1 overall seed and defending champion, who carded a 3-under 69 qualifying round to earn medalist honors. In Saturday’s first quarterfinal match, Krall posted a 3&2 victory over Jamie Wirth, VCSU math instructor. The other quarterfinal match in the top half of the bracket pitted Jamie Paurus, VCSU golf coach and instructor, against Jeremy Wiebe, former Viking baseball standout, 2008 VCSU graduate and current admissions counselor. Paurus emerged with a 2&1 victory, setting up a Sunday morning semifinal match versus Krall.

The bottom half of the bracket featured three current Viking golfers—Ben Sorenson, Travis Ingstad, and Shane Ost—and Matt Sorenson, a 2013 graduate and former Viking golfer. In the first match, Ben Sorenson defeated his older brother Matt Sorenson 2&1, while Ost defeated Ingstad by the same margin to advance to the semifinal round.

Krall continued his superb play on Sunday morning, cruising to a 5&4 victory over Paurus in the first semifinal match, and Ben Sorenson’s steady play earned him a 3&2 victory over Ost, setting up the afternoon’s championship match.

The championship match, viewed by nearly 75 spectators flooding the golf course with dozens of golf carts, came down to the 18th hole, where Krall secured par and a 1-up victory. For Sorenson, it was a well-played runner-up finish, his second in the last three years. For Krall, the win marks the fifth time in his young career that his name will be engraved on the trophy, tying him for third place all-time in the illustrious tournament that has been played annually since 1921.

Parking at VCSU

With good enrollment come varied challenges at college campuses. One of those challenges at VCSU is parking. Please be mindful to park within the lines in parking lots so we can maximize the spaces available. Also: don't forget the fairly new addition of the lots on the north side of the river just across the Footbridge.
